Ive heard they flog out real bad.
quick i actually just sold my new gt28rs for $1300 i was going to use on a diesel.
You can pick up the gtrs on the ricer forums cheap i would go a low k second hand unit before i would go one of the ones on the net even if its driven on the weekends..
or you could go a modified vl turbo that has been high flowed and thats similar to gt28rs however not a roller bearing..
what application are u going to use it on and that may shed some light on this..

What are they using on the vl's, I have a to4e i was going to use but believe it is too big,

Depends where in the rev range you want it to make boost, I'd think that a T04E would make massive midrange, but might lack a bit of response down really low, although there are a number of factors that can play a big role in your boost response. Eg, exhaust manifold design, exhaust design and size, tuning, whether or not the T04 has a ball bearing core, and the exact housing and wheel sizes that have been used in the turbo. It might pay to find a reputable turbo specialist and run through it with them before you go out and spend any more cash.

With a diesel, you want to utilise the rev range they are designed for. Having a big huffer spool up at 5k rpm wont help you in a diesel, you'll never use it.
A smaller one boosting at about 2-3k rpm would be ncie however
Are you replacing one or setting one up for the first time on your motor?

it will be running of the mtq manifold into 2.5 inch pipe thru intercooler and then intake manifold, running a 2.5 inch dump and 3" exhaust, using 2.5" dump to create back pressure and spool up quicker??? yes this is a first time,
Cheers

BACKPRESSURE WILL INCREASE SPOOL TIMES!
In a turbo setup, you want the turbine to be as unrestricted as possible... I would use a 3" dump pipe and matching exhaust right through.
For n/a motors, some restriction is needed or torque is lost, however a turbo setup is completely different.

4.2 litres is gonna spool a T04E pretty early regardless of whether it's diesel or petrol. As I said, exact wheel and housing sizes and trims (different combinations can be ordered and it will still say T04E on the cover), manifold design/runner size, and exhaust size/design will play a huge role in how well it all works together. At a guess I'd say you'd want to be looking for a fairly small exhaust housing to get it up on boost as early as possible. It would still be worth going and seeing your local specialist before you make a decision, they may be able to simply change the rear housing/wheel on your turbo to come up with just what you need. I've got a CA18 (1800cc) Nissan with a bitza turbo on it that uses a T28 exhaust housing and wheel, and T04B compressor, bolted to a stock log manifold, with a 3" exhaust, 2" cooler piping and front mount on an otherwise standard engine, and starts to make useful boost by about 2000-2500 rpm, all in before 3000rpm. My old VG30 (3ltr) with a single ball bearing TO3 made full boost at less than 2500rpm bog standard, so a TD42 equipped with a TO4 with a small exhaust housing should be a very viable proposition and you get to stick with your Garret turbo. Your dump pipe size should be dictated by the size of the exhaust flange on your turbo, you'll want to try and match this size as closely as possible and then step it out to your exhaust size just as early as is practical.

thanks ferret, that makes it a bit easier to work out, hopefully happening in the next few weeks so will keep you informed,
Would you have an indication to what exhaust housing would be better?

This is just a rough guess, but I would thnk that if you could get down towards a T3 VL housing you should be right. There should be something readily available to fit your T04 series core, as the VL guys mix and match combos like this a lot, it's just a matter of finding something that suits your needs. When you talk to someone about it, make sure you let them know exactly what you want it to behave like, their definition of acceptable lag and yours could be very different.

i do agree.
MONSTAPERFOMANCE on e-bay is the go.
you need the t3 exhaust side and the t4 front. they usually go for around the $350 but i have seen them go for $200.
i was getting one for the 80 series cruiser with their toyota 2jz-gte high mount manifold and external 40mm wastegate.this setup was perfect for the cruiser (4.2 td factory)and only required very slight change to the exhaust manifold where it bolts to the head.if you go these turbos please note you will need to buy the exhaust flange mount as they do not come with them.i worked out after watching heaps of the same product i could get the whole setup for around the $550 mark (this was worked out on a avarage of all the bids/auctions i was watching).i also know a fair few people who use these and have had no problems at all.
im sure you could do the same with one of the nissan manifolds also.ask them as they are very helpfull and are willing to help with real information and not just try flog you one of their products.

the 2jz and the 1hdt have 3 pipes then a space then 3 pipes..
pic (dodgy but gives you the idea) ... ...
the 2 inner pipes (closest to the space) need to be bent slightly inwards to fit. the holes need offsetting (like a aftermarket extractor manifold with slots insted of holes).

i cant remember what its called on e-bay but do a search for turbo exhaust flange and the shop will come up. it was around $30 delivered.

Im pretty sure you can get them from monsta also, just have to buy them seperately.
Anyone got a preferance on a manifold to use for this setup also.
