OK guys im looking at buying a new 4wd soon ive only ever owned patrols before and i know how they drive
But im down to 2 choices either a GQ LWB or a 80 series Landcruiser
-both would be say 1992 onwards year model
-both 4.2 diesel NA but i plan on fitting a aftermarket turbo kit to whatever truck i end up getting
-both would be running 4 inch lift with 35's of some sort
Im building this truck to be a capable, comfortable tourer and tripper with trips like fraser island ,tasmania and cape york in the coming years planned
so my question is what truck would make the better one out of these 2 for my purpose?
what would be the most comfortable and capable outta the 2
and what truck would have the best perfomance if both 4.2 diesel engine had a aftermarket turbo kit running 10psi with full 3 inch exhaust and dump pipe etc?
ive only ever had patrols and one range rover which we wont go into so your advice on anything landcruiser is appreciated ?
80

lol every patrol driver is going to say patrol and every cruiser driver is going to say cruiser
So i say 80

but id have to say the Tail Gate set up is better on a cruiser for camping and they have a bit more room inside. other then that its much the same, the front diff is weaker but only when pushed hard in reverse. the 1hz's sont like high boost much, but look for a factory turbo diesel.

yea well ive had a patrol so my soft spot is for a GQ but they drive very truck like i think, the 80's look like a more comfortable driver ?
how much boost can a 1hz's with aftermarket turbo handle 10,12 psi etc or less?

As you're using it mostly as a tourer, then the 80 series would be my choice (and that's what I bought). If you're doing serious rock crawling then I'd probably say GQ.

it will be set up for big trips but will be running 35 tyres so will be doing some hard Fourwheeling with it too , want capable and comfortable

yeh from what i read about that much is the max norm. if i ws you id look hard for a factory turbo diesel, they can be had for around the same price now and go allot better, and most go better then what you can make a 1hz go with a after market turbo.

There's no question about capability, both would be good. Chris from HiTech 4x4 in Penrith just came within a couple of points of Glenn Dobbins monster at the Trials. He drove his 80 series with 4" spring, 2" body and 38" tyres (plus lockers) no other special gadgets.....

I have owned my 80 for 3 years done about 85K in that time from darwin to bris twice, up and down the east coast that many times lost count, and the only drama i had was that i was too lasy to change the alt belt and it broke halfway across the barkley at night. other wise done some fairly hard driving off road and not a problem at all. i run 33 lockers and 4 inch lift.
the 80 is more comfortable as a tourer than a patrol, but that is the only difference. both are as good as each other, the driveline in the patrol is stronger thou.
