Oil Leak

Hi all,
I have a 1990 2.8 Diesel Hilux (fourby) which is pissing out oil somewhere between the engine and gearbox (it is deffinately engine oil). Causing conflict issues on peoples driveways :)

Because it will be a cheap seal and a fair bit in labour hours to get ther engine out etc. I was wondering if anyone knows or can reccomend a mechanic suitable for the job. (I normally service it - but don't have the equipment or knowledge to do the job)

Also what am I looking at pricewise for the entire job? Acouple of hundred?

I know your story well, i have same problem. Ive had the head off before and messed around with bits and peices , didnt consider myself handy with a spanner so what i have decided is, im going to save money on a mechanic and buy my own tools and fix it myself. Learn along the way :cool: What you could do with doing is getting a service manual and have a look and see if it is too difficult. Im going to hire a trolley jack so i can undo the bolts and roll it back out the way while i fix the seal. hope ive helped in some way :D

edit... Whats a mechanic usualy charge, does anyone know?

more than likely its the rear main seal .Pull out the gearbox pull of the flywheel pop out the old seal and pop in the new one.On the back of your rocker cover there is a half moon seal that leaks and runs down the back of the engine and gives the same effect,check this before removing gearbox,whilst gearbox is out its a good time for new clutch ,throwout bearing and spigot bearing.Its a very simple job to do and a nice way to save some money, and learn something as well.Beer will be your friend whilst doing this task. :)

thanks guys for the info, will have a look behind the rocker cover otherwise might get a service handbook and have a go. Problem is it is my only car at the moment and a day long job normally turns into a two week long job, so i might just have to cop this one and take it to a pro :cry:

for sure drop the box out if you have a bit of knowlage u should be able to do it easy in a day but allow 2. Just make sure you have the cluch plate lined up good becase you don't want to be lifting the box up and down you want it to go up and stay up that'd be the hardest bit thast i can see.

Have my self just recently replaced the rear main seal on my trucks H diesel.One item not mentioned so far and very handy.You can get the seal from most bearing shops,wilst getting a seal get your self a speedy sleeve.You can return it if not needed.The surface that the seal runs on can most times get a groove worn into it.The speedy sleeve covers this groove,Sure saves removing the crank and ethier repairing or relacing it.
It took 2 full days to change mine.Did the spigot bearing and the throw out bearing while it was apart.Clutch was fine.

cant help u with ya prob mate but i think the seal behind the oil filter assembly is leaking...is there one there and is it easy to renew?
