is this legal in VIC?

Would sort my exhaust issue with trying to get it to the back on the LWB.

I would probably route between body and chassis though but still have it exiting in front of the rear wheel

as far as i know it is legal, as long as the exhaust is further back than the rear door. someone please correct me if i am wrong. lol

According to the "Guide to modifications for Motor Vehicles" VSI 8, May 2003 from VicRoads:

The outlet must extend at least 40mm beyond the furthermost outboard or rearmost joint of the floorplan which is not continuously welded or permanently sealed. The outlet must not protrude beyond the perimeter of the vehicle when viewed in plan.

If to the side of the vehicle, the outlet must discharge downwards at an angle to the horizontal of not less than 15 degrees nor more than 45 degrees and to the rear of any adjustable window or vent. if the vehicle is manufactured after June 1988, the discharge must be to the right hand side of the vehicle.

not on a swb as the exhaust has too exit behind the tailgate. If it was a ute cab then yes you can as I had it setup like that. It is nice and protected on the LWB ute as it exited just behind the rise in the frame and was more protected there than at the back

I have it setup on my swb with 31 simexes and are yet to encounter a problem with fumes or offroad damage.

they aren't the problem, legality is the issue and it isn't legal in that setup

Hey thats my Rig!! lol

According to my mechanic it is legal IF

A: Its rearward of the most opening window.. in this case its the passengers.. NOT the REAR..

B: SHOULD be cut at a 45deg. angle towards the REAR wheel, as not to pump fumes into the vehicles/pedistrians beside you..

Just what i was told, might be wrong, might be right.. dont plan on changing it till i get questioned on it or squash it... lol

As far as i know (mechanic by trade) that should be exiting behind the last window or opening. Last time i looked at my soft top zook that was the rear of the vehicle, as the sort top is not air tight, therefore will allow fumes to access the cabin. Have ased this question to a ex RTA inspector that i worked with and his response was FAILURE.

ahhh well... cant win em all... :lol:

you see ALOT of 40's both hard and soft tops with side exiting exhausts..... the same with things like mustangs and Cobras with lake pipes i guess...

I'm not sure about the laws in Aussie land but here in the US they don't care about that stuff. I had dual side exit exhaust on my samurai. what I did was add a Y adaptor right after the Cat and then mounted short 12" cherry bomb mufflers at each end of the Y and ran piping out to each side right before the rear wheel well. If I were to do it again and was running a body lift of 3 inches. I would tuck every thing up higher and run the piping up in between the frame and the body. that way it'll be harder to knock off on a rock.
