Valve clearances: 0.35mm

Sounds like it's just suddenly started. Could be as simple as crap fuel.

Other possibilities are injectors / injector pump (although I assume that these are the same age as the engine?)

Try a new fuel filter if you haven't already tried this. It could be fuel starved from a clogged filter.

Puffing

Mate if it's puffing back through the snorkel it sounds like you dropped an inlet valve. Could be exhausting through this on compression.

1) drain all fuel out of tanks
2) bleed fuel system THEN
3) change all fuel filters from tank and in engine bay
4) change air filters (precleaner and main)

take for run, any difference?

could be anything from a valve, fuel pump, injectors, bad fuel, etc...

but start with the cheap guff.
