DIFFS TO GO GU TO GQ

thinking of down the track i might putt gu diffs to gq, seen it done once but the guy was a snob and wouldnt tell me how hard it was, then i herd third hand that gu and gq share chassis, just that gq diffs are 100mm wider with a 50mm positive offset rim bringing it back to the same wheel track as gq
dont know do you
also i think they share diff centers so i can use my lockers and ratio so if the above is right i just need diff housing axels and i believe gq brakes also fit even though gu is better
any info

The diffs will go in the joints are the same , you will need a front drag link ( adjustable ) to suit snake racing sells them .
from what i've heard the diffs and lockers will fit in not too sure about diff gears though.
depending on what diff out of which gu you put in depands on how wide they are also gu's run 16 inch rims instead of 15 , though saying that i have a gu and run 15's on it .
i would run the gu brake as they are twin spot calipers on the front and work much better .
gu diffs are much stronger built with thicker and stronger axles and housings but will bolt straight under a gq.

I have a ajustable draglink already for the 5 inch springs would this do I'm not shore which brand it is do you have an messurement thats needed

thanks mickal

i'm not too sure on that give ryan at snake racing a call on 02 95701588 he can answer all your questions .
the diffs under a 3 litre turbo diesel are the best choice cause there the widest and strongest , but also pricey .

i would of thought that they would have put the biggest and strongest on the 4.8's and how much wider are they

Ive got GU diffs in my GQ and it was simple to do. The other thing you need is the rear half of a GU tail shaft which will has the same sized spline on the front of the shaft as a GQ.

The reason for this is the stud pattern on the tailshaft is slightly different from GQ to GU. The front drive shaft bolts straight in though.

Cheers Mick.

are they 100mm wider </> are you running gq or gu wheels and is it realy noticable on road to look out with gq wheels and if you ran gu wheels it would be legal wouldn't it ?

They only measure about 20mm wider and they wheren't even noticable.

I'm running 15 inch wheels which just miss the callopers. With these diffs under it an engineer let alone a copper wouldn't even notice unless to told them.

The brakes are so much better than the GQ ones too.

dont gu stub axels go on gq with brakes and all, and if diff only 20mm wider (is that over all or each side) why go to the trouble

One word....Strength. GU front diff is MUCH stronger than GQ.

where is the extra stregth? cv's? housing? center? I,ve got 35's on my gq and air lockers and in the nearly four years I ve flogged it all I've done to a diff was I had all the bolts come loose in the rear pinion gear it destroyed gears but thats it

if it aint broke dont fix it then, basicly every thing is bigger: centre, cvs and axles.

im waiting till i break a diff befor i put GU diffs under it. i migh not drive hardcore enough to warrant it

I changed mine over for the gear ratios, better brakes and strength. The extra width had nothing really to do with it.

Cheers Mick.

The centers are the same , Ive got a gq center in a gu housing

from memory the centres are the same, front h233, rear h233 or h260, the h260 rear came out randomly on 3litres and leaf utes.
233 and 260 is the crownwheel size in mm.
All gu diffs should be the same width, which is around 28mm per side wider than a gq diff.
Front Gu diffs have stronger cv joints which is the weak link on the gq front, and iirc cheezy said that the gu diffs had a better turning circle than gq diffs.

Mine are out of a 2.8 litre. The other reason I went for these is with 37s it puts the speedo back to within about 2km/h of being acurate.

I'm pretty sure all GU diffs are the same width. Mine measure around the 20mm wider each side but I haven't measured them exactly though.

Cheers Mick.
