Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Just thinking up crazy ideas that I will probably never afford or find time to do but...
How would a triangulated 4 link and Fox air shocks go on the back of a Lux that sees a fair bit of road use as well as off road and comps etc?
Would I need to go the 2.5" versions to carry the weight?
It would be on the back of my extra cab hilux with trayback (and exo eventually).
The front will be a SAS with RUF leafs.
How much maintanence do the airshocks require? will I be forever needing to top up the gas in them etc.

Should I just go the cheap way and just fit coils?
Ideally coil overs would be the go but you are talking big dollars there.
The easiest thing to do would probably just get some longer custom leaves made up for the back but even doing that will require moving mounts, wrap bar etc. and with that effort still wont get as good a performance.

Just all ideas and probably wont get done for ages anyway just thinking over ideas

Best idea would be to check the legality of using air shocks. I am sure that the local DOT wont like them.

They are all illegal for road use in WA

I wanted to put coilovers/sway away setup in my race truck. The cop laughed his head off and said are you serious. They simply wont come at the serious chassis and mounting mods you require to fit a decent length shock in

i was told by cass jones about the sway away 2.0, they cant handle high speed use only the slow speed stuff got to do with the crappy piston they run, if ya want high speed then ya go the emulsion shok etc....

Discokid, Thats really strange because I know of a few escorts running coilovers and turret (i think thats what its called) rears legally..
One comes to mind which is in bunny..

Paul have you compared the price of a swayway coil over verse a airshock. it doesn't seem to be that much difference. I figure the cost comes in when you are trying to work out what springs to run..

Whats wrong with going coil rear? I'm sure alot of lux guys run coils?

every where i read it says they fade after a certain time at speeds?

they run coilovers and emulsion shocks.... king racing are VERY helpfull about all this stuff, their coils for coilovers are around 100 each coil and the coil over unit is still cheaper than an air shock

Its all going to be just too hard.
I think I will just go with custom longer leaves with relocated mounts and keep it semi legal for now.
It will probably evolve into coils eventuallyat a later date though

Yep desert racers use Emulsion shocks.

i thought the desert racers use the airshock as the coil carrier and then use the tripple bypass as the valving

Some do. Check out the latest DirtComp Magazine for a couple of Aussie Class 1 buggies with this setup (1 Jimco and 1 Chenowth)
