Range Rover reliability

G'morning everyone.
Im looking to move into a fourby for towing my boat and a little offroading, nothing hardcore.
Ive been looking at SWB patrols, but so far havnt had much luck.
Rangies have always caught my eye and i found this example just up the road from me.
http://www.carsales.com.au/used-cars/pr ... 1&trecs=29
I have done a little reading up on them and am a put off by the constant reliabilty cracks. Are these things really that bloody unreliable? Reliability is an important thing for me.
Weak diffs seem a common problem, is this only due to heavy offroad duties or is it an issue on the road too?
Basically i want to know if im going to be forever fixing the thing
thanks for your time
Tim

Well i own a rangie and i can tell you that from series 2 on there diff are as tuff as nails. People dont have any troubles with stock rangies and seldomly people have troubles with modded ones.
(mine is is modded) and like any fourby as soon as you put big wheels and lift kits you ware shit out like tie rod ends and radius arm bushes etc... i wouldnt say they are unrealiable, but bloody capable off road and will go anywhere!!! peace

The good thing about Rangies and Discos is that they have a bad reputation here in Aus. This means that you can get them cheap, and in reality reliance/strength in no worse than other brands.
....But they have heaps more comfort, ability and character than the Jap stuff, and towing capacity/rating is massive.

If you were looking at older rangies i would say be prepared to give up some of your spare time for maintainance but that 93' model with low mileage looks like a good unit and for the price would be a good buy.
Go for it and you will never go asian again ! it luv you long time

That rangie looks bloody good for the price - if it checks out well with a rover specialist, jump on it. Sure, things go wrong with them from time to time, but every car has its issues.... Talk to any mechanic who specialises in a particular make of car, and they will give you a list of common problems as long as your arm for that car. If you want a good reason to go with rangies though, have a look in the staff parking lot of most rover specialists (not dealers). You'll more than likely find a large portion of the staff drive them.

Looks like a good buy. Apart from the Lucas wiring gremlins that rovers have, they are no less reliable than any other 4x4. The diffs and axles will be fine for what you want to use it for.
Hey guys - would that be the LT77S box fitted to that model? Or an early R380? Either way, make sure your mechanic checks for mainshaft/t-case input wear - the only known problem that gearboxes around that time had - fixed by fitting a cross-drilled input gear or an oil feeder.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try and arrange a viewing over the weekend.
Isuzurover, which of those 2 are the better boxes. I would also like to know what box it has.
What other things in particular should i look for?
cheers

Pretty sure it will be a LT77S in a 93. I don't know if the R380 even made it into the classic Rangies.

I think R380 only in europe with the last of the classic soft dashes, very rare even over there. I guess you could've ordered one ex UK in '94, but why? Most new RR buyers back then pronbably didn't care.
I would agree it is probably an LT77, OK for normal duty, but not the worldsstrongest 'box.
