Need to rebuild my rear diff

Hi All,

My rear diff is quite noisy and the pinion seal is leaking quite badly. It looks like I need to rebuild it. Can anyone in Melbourne give me the names of where they have had this sort of rebuild done along with costs and work done? I have not pulled it apart to discover whether I have destroyed the crown and/or pinion yet.

The vehicle is a 1991 GQ with a TD42.

I guess that another option would be to buy a full rear axle assembly from a wrecker. I am guessing that finding these in good condition is pretty hard work these days?

Richard.

You must drive it really hard coz these rear diffs are pretty tough.

Nah, just the bearings wore creating freeplay that caused problems. As you say, they are pretty tough so the crown and pinion are probably all right.

try changing the outer pinion bearing first and if its no good then go for the rebuild, but chances are if you let it go to long it cases slack between crownwheel and pinion and can cause and uneven wear pattern witch will cause excessive noise when gears are set up properly
