Hmmmmm WDF Should i do install The Turbo Myself?

Post by Mulisha »

Hi guys..

I have ordered myslef a custom made Turbo Kit for my TB42 SHW Maverick.

Now i have almost come to the time pick it up but i have a few things in my way and not sure which way to go. The guy making the turbo is in VIC and i'm QLD-sunshineCoast.

My kit comes with:
One tunned legnth Manifold (stainless Steel)
50mm External WasteGate.
Ext gate TO4E Garrett Turbo.
One 3" stainless dump pipe.
One screamer pipe (into atsomphere)
Turbo and manifold gaskets.
One set of Teflon oil lines with oil fittings.
One 4" pod filter re useable.
All nuts bolts to mount turbo, wastegate and dump pipe.
Comes with 12 month warranty.
For $3300 Do you guys think i'm getting ripped?

Now comes the problems :bad-words:

I have to get rid of my carby and converter by the looks of it becuase there not big enough and will have to use Gas Research gear which costs a shit load.
The i have to get a dyno tune that is $300 becuase Gas research stuff is hard to tune !! FFS :bad-words: :bad-words:

As well i have to get a 3" exhaust made up from the dump pipe and the best price i got was $580 mandrel bend with flanges.
Not sure on what muffler becuase i want it to make noise and hear the turbo big time !!  Any recommend a muffler that will make the car bark not sound like shit but sound good deep and able to the turbo spool and hear the car from a distance.

I don't know what to do get someone to install all this and tune or install myself and get someone to tune it?
I have no idea what to do as i'm 18 and this is my first car ..

Can any point me in the right direction by any chance of turbo installers on the coast?

Cheers

Rick.!

installing it isnt that hard but i wouldnt risk tuning it yourself. if you run a turbo motor lean under load youll melt a piston real quick.

Remember u also have to make an oil return line into the sump!!!!!

Buy an impco kit. I know they r not as good but there have been a few for sale here.

I went on the gas research site and they dont recomend blow through setups!!!! I dont think i trust a draw through setup in case of backfire..

Screamer pipe is the pipe off the ex. wastegate, normally plumbed back into the exhaust. When they arent, they are called a "screamer" pipe, cos once the gate opens, u get the idea

Well i i think i may have sourced a XF throttle body and custom intake manifold but my question is ..

Will a Gas Research 350CFM Thrpttle Body be a better choice over the XF throttle body or am i splitting straws?

Throw this away and fit a real filter if you take it offroad.

XF throttle body would be ok if you were going fuel injected but if going gas stick with the GRA throttle body.

I reckon 350cfm would be too small though, ideally you want 400CFM+ but they can mod the 350 to get that, you dont need a whole new GRA t/b.

Thanks for the replys

I rang the guy at gra and he said that the 350cfm is plenty bigger enough beucase he said any bigger you will have to be reving the hell out of the car to get it to go anywere :?

I didn't think the bigger the CFM the more u needed to rev the car..i'm not sure..

I'm going to stick with GRA stuff not worry about anything else.

Also PSI250 why don't i need a complete t/b?

Cheers

the bigger the throttle body the less low down power you have but you gain it in top end power, which is good in a drag car but not a 4wd

Thanks Grinch that's why the GRA guy said unless you want to reving the shit out of the car above 4000rpm all day throw a bigger one on but if you want low down tourqe etc go with the 350cfm so it may be right not sure..

Cheers
