Thickness of chequer plate on tray top

Like it says - what thickness is best to use for the tray top?
I want to keep it light but strong (the fuel tank will be below it)
I have access to 3mm and 1.6mm fairly cheaply

alloy - 3mm
steel - 1.6mm

i used steel 1.6mm and i regret it - way too heavy prob 80kg's in total wish now i had used alloy

go the 3mm alloy that's what i used and it worked well.
just support it well

i have got a heap of 5mm checker plate ally but i got it for free from work. about 1G worth
