Truetrac is a gear driven limited slip. The Prado is fulltime 4WD isn't it? A mate of mine has one in his grand cherokee which is also fulltime 4WD and it keeps busting CV's. We think it is down to the extra load the truetrac puts on them in all the on road KM's and then when he works it hardish offroad with 33's it just snaps the CV's. He's replacing it with an OX locker.

how is a full locker going to relief any stress cf. a true-trac? the true trac can at least slip. i havent had any issues with the true tracs in both my diffs in full time, part time or 2wd.

Being selectable is inconsequential, when its on, it will not provide less stress and likely more on CVs, axles etc because there is no "give" in the system. Im also presuming that the breaking of CVs was a result of off-road carnage not black top driving. Im only enquiring, becuase its the first I heard of true-tracs being the cause of that kind of damage and is often heard of when using full lockers.

Current thought is having the truetrac while drive on the blacktop has damaged the CV's to a point (due to the load of the limited slip) but not caused them to break, then when under additional load offroad they break. He's gone through 3 in 3 trips and one was on the sand at Stockton!!! Busted none prior to the truetrac.
The OX locker is selectable so obviously no issue on the road.
Do you drive in fulltime all the time on the road? if it's an XJ then I guess like me you run in 2WD most of the time. I'd have no issue with putting one in mine where I can just select 2WD. The Grand Cherokee and Prado dont have this option.

I think the point here is...
Hes looking at putting one in a toyota...
The example used was in a HEEP.
One is a proven offroad performer in australia.
The other is a proven POS.-remember cherokee burning on stockton not too long ago...
re Prado locker

Regardless of how much you love Toyota, if you put a locker in a constant 4wd you are looking for trouble. The Ox or ARB allow the diff to run open on road and locked offroad. Best of both worlds.
And some would dispute that a Prado is a proven offroad performer in Australia.

I'm trying to offer the guy some information that may help. How about you try and do the same instead of the usual Jeep bashing

yeah one is "suppose" to be a proven offroader in Australia, but not according to 4wd monthlys review...and the other (Jeep XJ) has been a proven offroader WORLDWIDE for over 20 years
Yeah Steve, refering to my XJ. Dunno sounds weird? A mate of mine has a Lokka in his GC and has had no probs as yet....Something I didnt want for the XJ even. In that case then, I suppose the selectable locker would be a safer option.
