Top choice clutch for GQ

Well... my TB42 Mav has started slipping a little when changing into higher gears. Much as I'd like to think it's adjustment, I am pretty sure it's just the friction plate heading south.

So, what is the best choice of replacement clutch, and what should I pay to drive into a workshop and drive out with the new clutch fitted?

Also, can I get the ring gear done easily at the same time as I have a nasty scccrunch every second time I try to start her up?

Anyone got a recommended mechanic around Melbourne for this job?

Heavy duty RPM's are a good clutch.

I run the factory 4.2 GU Turbo Diesel Clutch in my TB42.

on my TB42 i stuck a Excedy Sports Clutch, was good till i rolled her

I now have a TD42 and running a Excedy Safari Tuff Clutch

Both of these were extremly good, still getting used to the Safari one as its got more instant grip and the changes in a diesel are different to a petrol, Diesel's drop revs very quick when you press the clutch, petrol's don't

i would recommend either one of them, the Sports clutch if you are doing more towing then 4WDing, Safari if you do more off roading as they allow for more slip and don't tend to heat up as much, so i have been told

I ahve recently installed an extreme outback clutch. It a lot better than my old PBR heavy duty. I paid $275 plus freight from SA. Hope it handles the turbo!

Safari Tuff clutch is one of the best ones around my mechanic friend said he would never fit any other clutch to a patrol making good power. Handling my supercharger just fine i have had it for a year. My PBR heavy duty lasted 15000km or so

Speak to Rohan at Midas Lilydale he does an excellent job and has a good price-he also won outback and alpine challenge last year so knows his patrols and 4x4's well

Interesting cause mine lasted around 20,000km b4 the fingers snapped off on the pressure plate grrrrr. What color was your clutch and where do u get pbr clutches? Mine was installed just b4 i bought my car so i was thinking of taking it back to whoever sells them.

You could alway speak to Sandy from aus4wd, he knows patrols inside and out 9729 4899...

I am not much help, didn't see the clutch that came out when the safari went in and i am in the same situation as you clutch was just installed before i bought the car

Pbr and/or rpm dont cut it. Safari tuff is definitely the better of the three. it depends on how much power you r running whether to go something better again

im running gq with 240rwkw , clutch is 2 years old and done 2 alpines, obc, 2 atecos and couple others inc bush drives most wkends and is still good. run 36in tyres only. fitted by ontrack 4x4 vic , very happy

Funny thing with my clutch, soon after this last thread in December it just stopped slipping so I thought I'd leave well enough alone. However, it started slipping again on Sunday.

I get a "no such number" message when I ring 9729 4899, what's the go?

I have rung a couple of places and got quotes of $913 and $950 to install a new clutch. I will pay this if I have to, but it sounds a bit steep even though I know it is a bit of a shitty job. No hope of doing it myself, I don't even like doing clutches on light little gearboxes.

I seem to remember people saying they have gotten this done for sub-$500 somewhere..? Or am I dreaming?

I am in Boronia.

hey mate 900 to 950 is pretty normal as people charge throuh the teeth for labour i am assuming that this price was including a clutch kit though. i payed $500 for my clutch and $500 to have it fitted to a swb gq, have done 20000 hard kms and not one sine of slipping or a problem to speak of and thats with a 4 terrain clutch.

i have fitted exedy safari tuff clutched to my td42 and tb42 from stocko's to running 18 lb boost..

fit the diesel clutch kit regardless if you have a td or tb. these have a much higher clamping pressure and better dampning springs in the friction plate.

i will continue to use them because they are off the shelf, easy to get, not a bad price really but seem to get a good run out of them. nothing is bullet proof. it will last as lont as you treat it!

cost wise, well this depends on who you know.
generally between $500 -- $650 and then allow for a machine of your flywheel, genuine rear main seal and around $400 in labour. unless you do it your self. generally most people outlay around $1k.

oh and if you haven't got a boosted clutch master, GET ONE !, youl need it.... :D

Yep, thanks! I ended up with about five estimates all of $950 plus, so I have just dropped it off with the guy who is within walking distance and who can get it done by tomorrow. He also always seems to have Mavs there getting work done...

Ah, it's some heavy duty clutch that the mechanic said is the best deal. It will outlast my ownership of the vehicle no matter what I reckon, I only ever do 5000km a year in it.

Hey chimpboy, what are you like at swinging off spanners? Changing clutch isn't that hard to do, just very heavy work. Nothing too technical about it all, could save you $500 + if you've got the time.

Too late... I've dropped it off. But honestly, I've changed a fair few clutches in my life and have no desire to do it with the heavy as fark gearbox in the Maverick. Besides for the Maverick I only have a sloping workspace at the moment, I can work on a small car on level ground behind my house but the Maverick won't quite fit between the fence and the house.

This guy will have it done tomorrow, too, and I wouldn't have a hope until at least a week and a half from now.
