A speed camera would have prevented that!

pushrods would generally be noisy if they are bent, so maybe pull them out and have a look. Another way to adjust your tappets (although it can be a pain in the bum) is to pull the rocker cover off, loosen all the locknuts and start the engine. Adjust the tappets until the noise stops and then lock the nuts back up. Ideally I would prefer to adjust them to specs, but if they are still noisy, try the above method. If this does'nt fix it, you know the problem lies elsewhere, like in the pushrods or worn cam lobes.

i adjusted mine, they were still noisy, so i whipped the rocker cover off again and double checked them, still noisy, so i whipped it off again and did them once more, but this time i wound them down until i had to use force to slide the feeler gauge through them, they are silent now and i havent had any problems since
A little bit, but not really as long as you don't rev the engineits aford not a nissan wrote:sounds messySexy Fingers wrote:pushrods would generally be noisy if they are bent, so maybe pull them out and have a look. Hi fellas.
I've been chasing this tappet noise for a while now. I've adjusted the tappet clearance down to 10 thou which is less than half of the recommended clearance. The tappets are quiet at cold idle but when the revs are increased and the motor reaches operating temp, the noise is clear and damn annoying.
Following the above advice to reduce the clearance has not worked in my case and I'm afraid that any smaller gap will destroy the valve and seat.
I've pulled a few push rods and they are straight. There is a small scuff mark on the rocker shaft where each arm runs (which is reasonable), however there doesn't seem to be any play between the shaft and arms. I've check the tappet clearances with a dial gauge and they're 10 thou.
My understanding is that if any wear has occured on either the valve stem, arm, push rod or lifter etc. that gap can be taken up with the tappet adjustment.
Therefore in my case the noise must be coming from the lifter banging on the cam or sticking in the bore..........
Comments please........before I rip the head off and discover that there's nothing wrong with the cam / lifters !!!!!!
Dunc.

noisy
The rocker arms get worn in a concave shape where they meet the valve therefore giving a false reading. try adjusting the clearances using a dial guage

DR Frankenstine:- "I've checked the tappet clearances with a dial gauge and they're 10 thou." There is some wear on the valve stems, but that is taken up by the rocker adjustment.
351ciofgrunt:- I know this is a tappet noise because I've used the hose and ear method. It is ticking clearly when the hose is near the top of the valve. About 1/2 are really noticeable and the other half are bearable.
The delema is:- the repair manual recommends that if either the camshaft or lifters are in need of replacement - replace both.
Tighe Cams in QLD can gring the cam - good - but I may need lash pads to make up for the lost metal......Does anyone make a billet cam for TB42???
Dunc.
