Hey i am wondering wat you all reakon do up a vitara or do up a sierra

I reckon you should try the search.

sierras are cheaper and easier to do up.

the usual questions:

which do you want to do up?

what will you be driving?

where will you be driving?

how extreme are you going to go?

and do you know all the differences between the 2?

you cant just ask which we reckon you should do up, cos most will say do the sierra. and you probably will in the end, so maybe this question will be pointless.

I never understand this question. you may as well ask, sierra or Hilux? the vehicles are very differnt and will suit different purposes. a more realistic comparison would be vitara/feroza or sierra/.... on second thoughts there is nothing like a sierra

I have spent 2 or 3 hours yesterday searching this forum for a comparison of vitara vs sierra both in specs and abilities.

Do you have a link to show the differences? I am trying to decide aswell, Decided I wanted a light 4x4 for occasional beach/bush, nothing serious. I have been told the Vitara can pull a bit easier which is good cause I have a bike I tow on a trailer.

I know that the mainstream world see's Vitara's as a toy 4x4. But I think that is not a fair statement.

Hi EXC, if you want a second car for everyday use that can tow your bike around and have a play on the beach the Vitara is probably the best as it is a little bigger and comes with a bigger engine - Sierra standard are 1.0 litre for pre '87 models or 1.3L for '88 or newer, Vitara are 1.6L.
From what i can gather the Sierra is easier to mod for 4x4ing as it is not IFS like the Vitara?

Yeah hard question, I own a Sierra SPOA. I would go for a Vitara just for the comfort side. However that is in the future, as a Vitara cost more to mod. But at the end of the day it's up to you and I would think it'll come down to the dollar factor. The fun for your buck....

Are Vitara's more expensive to maintain? My understanding is the Sierra has the Swift/Barina engine, which means parts should be easy to find and reasonably cheap? (plus my g/f has 1 I can steal parts from ) How does the Vitara compare on parts? The other thing is that people seem to be putting the Vitara engine into the Sierra, so it must be a better engine?Or is it just more powerful?

I am not refering to modifications, just replacement parts.

I am in no way 'into' 4x4 as I have never had one...who knows I may be after a year! I always watch the 4x4's taking 20 mins to get up a hill and think "get a bike...you'd be up there in 2 minutes" However most the guys I ride with 4x4 aswell and say how they are happy to do either on the weekend. So I may get the '4x4 bug'. In which case I think I'd get a cruiser or patrol, cause I'd get something big enough to tow my car with (I drift it - 'race car' sorta thing)

Because I am not 'into' 4x4 ATM, the availability of mods isn't a huge deal to me, As long as both cars are fine for most beach stuff and a decent range of bush (nothing serious...just for fun)

Straight from factory standard, is the sierra a much more capable 4x4 or only once you start making mods?

Would a pajero have any hope towing 2 tonne (trailer +car) If not, I think I'll lean more towards the smaller 4x4 range.

PS. I just drove a Vitara in my lunch break, it went pretty well as far as being a 'nice' car to drive. I am checking out a 85 Hilux tonight and hopefully a sierra.

the vitara would be the choice if your not going to be doing serious 4x4'ing in. The sierra is alot more truck like than the vit and comfort and roadhandling is alot worse again. but offroad the sierra walks alll over most 4bys. The vitara has the 1.6, they got Efi in the early 90's.
Put some fat mud tyres on the vitara and beach driving will be great. Maybe difflocks and all the other accesories might find their way onto it.
vitara's performance parts(suspension etc) are more expensive but if your not going to modify extremely then it doesnt matter.
If you are driving on the road 90% of the time go the vit!
I think that should cover it im puffed out now..

BTW is that a wheel lifting of the ground on the vitara???

i would go a 98 GV, cheap, comfotable and plenty of grunt for a zook.

Well i wanna race them in mud runs and gymkanas and other races like that

whats wrong with a wheel off the ground? and yes, it is off the ground. but it did drive up on the same block as that sierra did, no smaller rocks or ramps to get up. and no that you can see, or anything, the sierra does have a rear 3/4 set up with the pins out.

so considering the sierra has more flex than my vit, i'm ok with that. he has SPOA, and rear 3/4, and i still have my IFS.

anyway.....

just look at the aftermarket support for any car you are deciding with, and you will clearly see which is more popular.

look for the availability of:

engine mods, extractors, cams etc etc
transfer reduction gearing
lockers for front or rear diffs

would you be able to go a buy readily lockers and reduction gears for a feroza or rocky? maybe, but i still know i can get that stuff for my vit quite easily. and a hell of a lot easier for the sierra.

If you need to cart anything around go buy a Hilux. Or maybe test drive a Sierra, compare it to a Vitara and tell us all about it

well this is my old stock zook before i gave it any attention.. and hell the 4x4 bug bit me in less than a minute from driving the little bugger..



fun as hell and you cant go wrong. just go for a zook/vitara and enjoy it.. dont get all hung up on 'bigger is beter' cos zooks go hard regardless..

well my friend is doing up a suzuki sierra ute with a 4age motor and he does alot of racing and he reakons vitaras are smoother but he likes sierras

4AGE? interesting. Is that a normal conversion for a zook?

Yer it is kinda more ppl are doing it now his brother is a fabricator and has a friend that does alot of mods to suzuki and 4age is the most popular motor going into them

Vitara 1.6 would take that title i would think, though yes teh 4a motors are getting popular
