Outer Limits 4x4 Board

OK.... hypothetical question, but need serious answers:

What is the largest tyre you can comfortably fit under an X90 with no cutting of guards (front and rear bumpers removed though) with:

4" suspension lift

3" suspension lift plus 2" body lift

4" suspension lift plus 2" body lift

Well from what i know they are essentailly vitaras with a different body so what ever works on a vit sholud work on one of those. A 4'' sus lift is gonna be real hard and a 3'' body lift is quite alot harder then a 2'' one (i personally dont know but im sure someone on here has one) a 2'' sus lift and a 2'' body lift is pretty easy and sholud fit 32s or so and then you can play wit the grinder and fit something bigger.

The X-90 has a smaller wheelwell than the Vit so whatever goes for the Vit less a little. What 4" suspension are you proposing?

i think a 3" BL is easiest, even though it is more involved.

on a vit, with a 3" BL and a 3/4" SUS lift, a 31" fits with no bashing or cutting of guards etc.

on an X90, you may need to trim a little even with the 3+3 combo to clear 31"s.

with a 4" lift (over stock height) the front shafts will bind tightly at full droop. you will need to address that before anything else if you plan to go ahead.

any more info or sneek peeks?

Possible project vehicle .... sussing things first before deciding on doing it.... I'm not used to dealing with IFS

So, a 2 + 2 is a better option? Hoping to get 30's - 31's under. Will a 2" bodylift need the steering shaft extended, brake lines and how is castor/whatever corrected?

Will I need to move the main wiring harness down the firewall (like the Jimny) and what about shifter extensions?

Would like to fit 30s - 31s under..... what are the standard rims on an X90 and are there fouling issues with 15x7 or 15x8s?.....or am I barking up the wrong tree and they run 16s?

3 inch body lift is easier than a 2 inch.
35 inch tyres ,solid axles, 95 inch wheelbase, 60 series steering, you'll only have to cut the bumpers (off) not the guards.

Glen Wakefield at Rocky Road did one up a few years ago. there may be some details about it on his website. I think guard cutting was the go, pretty straight forward as there isn't much behind the guards that needs to be moved or modified

32's are my limit and it has to be a daily driver, within a certain budget and remain "Suzuki Pure" to fit within the project criteria

Still in the pipeline at the moment, gotta bring myself to sell Stimpy, we've only just finished everything and he's just at that perfect balance of toy, tourer and daily driver..... still have research to do on X90's before I get to that hurdle

why get rid of the Jimny? I reckon going to the X90 you will be taking a massive step backwards. There is no room in them so you are basically restricted to a two person car with no storage space. Also they are just ugly

X90 has the advantage of being able to pull a trailer.... forget it with Stimpy, he's like a dog with worms dragging his bum along the carpet.

My other idea was grafting a Mighty Boy onto a Sierra chassis.... but Podge gave me funny looks..... ummm... he's giving me funny looks about the X90 too come to think of it
He's going to teach me to drive his 'longey... so I won't need anything too hardcore.

I've seen a few O/S ones as well as Sam's and there's some decent stuff out there for them. Like I said, Stimpy is family.... I may not be able to part with him when push-comes-to-shove

OK.... I've been pestering David at Calmini USA (lovely patient man ) about their buildups and have come up with the 3+3 kit (body lift and suspension) and drop in superlow gears.

He's recommended that I don't go wider than 9.5" with the tyres, which means only a 30 in MTRs (gotta stay with MTRs due to sponsorship). So without cutting - I can still go a 31x10.5.
However, what's my top speed going to be on 30's or 31's with (copied from the Calmini site) "Final reduction of 4.24:1 is a whopping 134% lower than stock! When used with the stock axle ratio of 5.12, it yields a crawl ratio of 79.3 :1"

Don't want to do 5000rpm at 90kph!

Oh... and I will need to do a 2-2.5" backspace on rims....

This a work project or personal?

For road speed you will need;

RPM x 4th gear x 2H ratio x diff ratio x 22/7 x tyre diameter (in metres)

that will give meters per minute, divide by 1000 to kilometers and multiply by 60 to hours.

i say use 4th coz i'm used to fifth being overdrive, try with both.

.... I know *nothing* about Vitaras

I've recently been informed (thanks Podge) that unlike Sierras and Jimnys, Vitaras (thus X90s) high range is not affected by super-low gear swapouts.
Calmini have suggested 5.83:1 axle gears - but don't currently produce 12 bolt units.
I am assuming front and rear would be needed?

Can anyone suggest an alternative to bring the high range back to "normal"? Don't want to dog it off the lights and leave my clutch on the road

Ahhhh....

hmmm, if the gear swap doesn't affect high range, and you don't alter the diff ratio (yes you'd have to do both for 4wd) then tyre size is all that's going to effect practical ratios.

from what i've gleaned 4th is 1:1 as is 2H and the diff is 4.625, with the 5.83 in the axle you'll lose about 20% off your top end.

Guess it depends just how hard you want to go offroad, the low range gearing should be plenty for you.

Squik, The Calmini thing is the go. I have been involved with fitting almost all of their kits and they are reaaly well engineered. We had 32" x 11.5" muds under a Vit with not much drama. And the High range in the gear kit is not all that low, but the low range is awesome.

Anyway if things dont work out with the X-90 you could buy my GV Its all CALMINIed up Its in the For Sales. ( plug....plug )

My only concern was high range being dogged onroad. Will running 30 to 32's depending on how much room we have after a 6" combo lift.

When we originally put 30s on the Jimny, it was faster to push it off the lights....

He's going to a really nice bloke who is going to use him as a promotional vehicle, Stimpy will like that.... so it's not too bad. The guys not a pup and is as pedantic about cars as I am, so I know he will be looked after

Project X90 is all systems go

I've sourced a one owner, 97500km, auto JLX 4X4 (powersteering, aircon and alloys) with a full service history that has never been used offroad. This thing is like new... still has original unused spare, log books and original toolkit and jack - never used.... well worth the hunt for a good one. (had an NRMA mech check done and it's all sweet) Goes like a cat with its balls on fire
