How come ?
My understanding was that it's just mega-power steering.

it would need to be engineered and im not sure if engineers would approve such a mod.

pretty sure your right. no matter how fast u turn the wheel, the rams operates at one speed

Your input is always the same isn't it, "Can't engineer it"

Hydro assist is OK to get engineered, (have engineered lots).
As for driving on the road, If its working right eg; pump pressure, ram size ect ect you dont know the differance.
As for full hydro, you cant get it engineered. Have you ever driven a forklift over 40k's

I thought u could get full hydro eng but had speed limited to 30km/h.
forklifts are

because they are rear wheel steer. Loaders, haul trucks and graders are all full hydro, drive ok and are road rego.

Blown hose on hyd assist steer = hard steering
Blown hose on hydrostatic steering = no steering
Obviously not a good idea for a road driven vehicle, even if someone did engineer it.

as I understand it hydro assist is fine, any set up provided there a solid link between wheel and to the box and the set up is strong and geomatry is ok
some

Yeah we got tractor with full hydro steer and if engine cuts out, hose blows or pump/system fails=no steer, wheel just chunks around lamely, which is very very scary either on or off road even at low speeds

If yor engine stalls with a hydro setup, you still should have steering, it will just f@#*#n heavy.
If your tractor wont steer with engine off, steering unit (obital) may be worn (rare) or steer cylinder may have a leaking piston seal (common).
If ya wanna check, with engine running turn wheel fully left or right and hold. It should come to a complete stop. If you can still turn it slowly, there is a leak in the system.
Or with engine off, jack up front wheels and do the same. Steer wheel should still come to a stop.
