Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Looking at getting a new esky, the boss is buying me one for chrissy.
Looking at spending $400 mark, around 90 litre size.
Want to know peoples thoughts, experiences etc..

I have a Downunder, made from the bloke that used to own/make Evakool. I chose it because it was much cheaper than anyone else was willing to go with an evakool plus it has nice big baskets to keep items out of the ice/water. I have the 62L model and very happy with it. I'd buy it again.

Those that stock Evakool don't stock Downunder and vice-versa i generally found. I bought it from Amart All Sports because they were having a 10% off storewide at the time. I didn't know they stocked them till a mate phoned me up and told me as he knew i was chasing one

I have a downunder too... 73L and can't fault it.

I bought mine as a second, because apparently some of the gelcoat isn't perfect... f**ks me where its not, cos it looks it to me.

I have abused this thing something shocking... its taken bashing, drops, rough slamming of the lid, all sort of shit and its only got 1 small crack in the exterior.


Also had a Tropicol 85L which was just as good but sold it because it didn't quite fit in the back of my truck with all camping gear and i mainly bought it to bash around the boat anyway.

Is the Downunder esky a fibreglass or poly style?
Was told the fibreglass ones will not take as much abuse, and crack etc..

Downunder = Fibreglass
Tropical = Poly

The downunder i have is pretty bloody sturdy considering its glass. The other thing is it takes alot less ice to keep things cool in a fibreglass.

The glass ones trap the cold in, wheras the poly tends to absorb some of the cold before it cools things down. Once it does cool down its ok, just takes alot longer, and sometimes takes more ice to keep it cool.

i got the tropical ice box 82 litre....got the poly style purely for the strength compared to fibreglass ones...

like said it may take a bit to cool down but mine has kept stuff cold for days on end and never had to restock the ice in them..get yourself a gel pack that you can sit on top of your stuff in the esky..Amart have them for like $14 and they work excellent

Have a look at the eskys on the front page of the trading post this week (techni ice) I have one cost stuff all and works just as well as the tropical and thats from experience. The eva cool while being a fantastic esky has the glass surround and that what it is, no good if you intend throwing it around a bit as my brother will testify. They smash some what easier

use a bar fridge, strip the motor out and your set. keeps ice for just as long as any esky. heaps cheaper.

tropical ones dont have a tap to let water out do they?

But don't forget that letting the ice water out decreases the efficiency of the esky

The orange tropical one i looked at had two sections with a tap in each end, 85l.
Also saw a nice esky at BCF, yellow only. Its a 105l poly finished better than a tropical, think its made by Evacool.

Rustynuts are the Techniice eskys well made? They look good for the price.

I am picking up one of the 80lt units advertised on the second page of melb trading post on Monday.

I will let you know what I think. They come with bags of reusable dry ice $145.

If you're going to get one that's 80L+ it should be fine if you load it up with ice as the huge area inside will keep ice for ages!
