I am in the process of buying a gq TD 4.2 4 speed. Can the 5 speed gear box fit?

Are you sure it is a GQ? AFAIK they never made a 4 speed GQ.

Maybe the GQ 5 speed was originally a 4 speed (no overdrive housing bolted to the back)?

If the gq is the same as the y60, then there is a 4 speed in addition to the 5 speed, according to the manual. There are especially common here for those before 92

Yes the GQ is the Y60. In Australia we only got the 5 speed, where are you?

Hard to be sure since we never got the four-speeds here as far as I am aware, but I don't think the TD42 engines would be any different, so at a minimum the five-speed gearbox ought to bolt straight onto the engine.

That will still leave you with some prop shafts and other things to deal with, which are relatively minor but will still cost a little bit in spare parts and/or customising.

If you had access to a complete 5-speed diesel GQ to scavenge parts from that would be the best.

I must say though, a four-speed gearbox with that motor wouldn't really strike me as a huge problem; there's not much you can do in fifth that you can't do in fourth anyway.

Except go faster. :D But you're on a small island, so perhaps speed is not such a big deal. Fourth in the five speed is a direct gear. Perhaps the fourth gear in your tranny and the gearing in your difs are different ratios with the four speed model?
