hi guys, i recently got an 87 d/cab lux petrol. when i got it i was told the head gasket had gone. after replacing the head gasket and filling with oil i was pissed off to find the water getting into the oil somewhere.
when we orinally took off the head we could see where the gasket had been letting the water through into the no.4 piston.
where else could the water be getting in?.
also are 4y's known for doing heads.
cheers.

Unfortunately the most likely scenario is a cracked head then. I have seen Y series crack across the top of the head so the coolant seeps straight into the oil.
Did you get the head machined?
Are you sure the headgasket is sealing correctl?

yeah, got the head shaved and pressure tested and came back fine.
thats why im stumped
and as far as the gasket sealing correctly, it was put on by a mechanic friend who does it every day.
but you never know.
might have to take the head off again and have a look

main problem with the Y series motors are head gaskets
looks like your problem is still in the head gasket or a crack in the block

I would be chcking the welsh plugs before you rip the head off again. Seems like a very likely point of failure if the head has tested fine.

How about checking the block to see if it's true. Blocks can warp but isn't that comon just throwing it out there. shaddow where are the welsh plugs that seperate the water jackets from oil galleries???

dunno about a 4Y but in a 2H(engine im familiar with) they are in behind the push rod covers.
If they leak water drops straight down into the sump.

thanx for the suggestions guys. ive got the thing running but cylinder 4 isnt firing. the plugs and leads look new but i might try swapping a plug around.
still doesnt help the milky oil though
ill have a real good look around the block tomorrow to see if there is any evidence of damage or a hammered welshy, if not looks like the heads coming off again.

Yeah just used to eng's with the welshies only where the leak out and run on the ground and not into the oil thanks i'll keep that in mind if i ever come across same prob any ideas are better than none.

i was just outside having a good look at the block and seen the engine no.
it was 3Y 106 blah blah blah
i cant beleive i didnt notice this b4
im assuming the blocks are the same so the gasket shouldnt matter should it ? as i dont know if a 4y or 3y one was purchased.
someone along the line has obviously done a swap.
i might end up just getting another motor for it. does anyone know if a 3y would much cheaper then its big brother? power isnt much of a concern and its on gas so itl be a slug anyway.
oh yeah. if i do decide to take out the motor, whats the best way to do it. with or without the box?

yay!! keeps on getting better. now oil is pissing out of the rear main seal.
do you think running the motor with three cyliders firing would have hammered the seal?

Dude there were two 3y and one 4y motors on ebay last weekend. Maybe still on there now. They only wanted 400 and i think one had no reserve. Don't remember location but they are as cheap as a working girl.

Another thing to consider is that once oil and water mix and become milky. It will stay in the cooling system/ oil system for ages. You do really need to flush the system out a couple of times. We do it all the time at work

good point coz the oil doesnt really look that bad just a bit of milk.
and the oil that left a long trail up my driveway looked fine, but i was too pissed off to have a good sus at it.
by the way i wont bother with "glitz" degreaser again to clean the driveway, all it did was make a big red stain around the oil stains.
two buck can done a better job.

Hey you can always take it to a radiator shop to do a head test before you start on anything big. they do a sort of pressure test to see if you have a cracked head. Takes about 5 mins for them to do.

my 3y did 400thou plus kms kicked ass never overheated.i use slick 50 treatment ,guaranteed not to wear out metal such as rings and cylinders even when out of oil man . check it out. 100 bucks is cheap ins. i drove 5,500 kms with one piston down 35 % compression.! no shit.
my bro got one of those new motors for 1100 in surfers area and had nothing but dramas with it. could be his carb and dizzy but that all was fine before they put her in. ask if they will get her running right first . as for the oil , well yr block must be cracked somewhere. wait for a new motor on ebay. people are always thrown these out cheap,
