Touring suspension choice??

Hello there,

I have just bought a 1990 GQ Patrol and wish to set up the suspension for some long touring of Australia early next year. I have looked at Old man emu, TJM XJS, Dobinson, Tough dogs, Lovells as well as Koni shocks, Rancho etc. I need to carry a significant amount of weight so need heavy duty springs and possibly polyairs. I would like to lift 2-3 inches and have noticed there is a lot of choice for 2 inch but not so much HD springs or options in 3 inch. Can I please have any feedback, opinions, reccomendations of what people think in regard to this matter. Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Paul

all will do the job, but I'd go with Koni or OME from personal experience.

PS. Ive tried
Koni - twice on 2 cars
TJM - once with first lift, great budget stuff
Rancho - shit
OME - outstanding.

The reason there is a lot of choice in 2" but not 3" is that many manufacturers do not make 3" because it is not street legal in all states and territories.

Note that even 2" may not be legal in all states either depending on other mods to your vehicle.

Whether this matters or not is up to you, (and whether said plod on the side of the road knows the exact height unlifted of your model patrol to prove it) but you could read a nice little response from QLD transport on the issue.

Pretty much all the brands you'e stated would be fine, but I think that Rancho and Tough Dog are vastly overrated and OME and TJM are all pretty overpriced. I'd be leaning Dobinsons, Lovells or EFS.

Make sure you get an accurate estimate of what your rig will weigh loaded up (maybe from someone with similar mods) and then approach your suspension dude....

i fitted two inch ome springs 80kg heavier in the front and 120 in the rear tough dog adjustables and polairs, steering dampner and sway bar extensions has been going well with the weight of five peoples gear on five to fourteen day trips for over two years without any problems and still handles well thru fast corners or over rough tracks just about to do three weeks in tassie i,ll letyou know if we break anything .

Either or OME or Koni.

You pay for what you get,

But dont bother with tough dog or rancho more suited for people who want a long shock.
