Confused.

Hi All

I am confused about the different models of patrols. i am after 1998 and onwards patrol(deisel). A dealer stated that there are a few models. The 2.8L, the 3L and 4.2. Is the 2.8L a 4 or 6? The dealer said 4 but many advertisements say they are a 6.

Hope you can help. I am looking for something to tow my camper trailer and do general touring and 4x4ing. Nothing extreme. How does the 2.8 compare with the 3?

Ok here is the deal

From 98 there was 2 Diesel models, the 2.8L TD and the 4.2L Turbo Diesel. both are 6 cylinders

in 2000 the 2.8L Diesel was removed from the line up and the 3L Diesel was introduced to replace it which is a 4 Cylinder model with electronic direct injection, however, the 3L diesel in the Series 1,2 and some of the 3's had major problems due to blowing the engine up.

There are 2 petrol models, the 4.5L EFI and the 4.8L EFI.

Hey MyGq

I am looking at the same issue as well, hoping to upgrade from the old MK SWB, and have been aware of the 3L issue but am also confused as to which series is the trouble maker.

It appears from your post, if I read it correctly, that the series 1,2,3 has the problems.

Not an expert by any means but does this mean all 3L are suspect.

I would be happy with the 3L Diesel Turbo as it would suit what I am after. The other bigger options would be nice but to pricey for what I want to do.

Any further advise appreciated, thanks.

Thanks Folks

So the 4.2 is the go then!!

Any big issues between the DX and the ST (around the 1998-2000 vintage). I assume you can get factory Turdo's in the DX model?

The DX appears to be a little cheaper, 5 seater etc.and Red Book do not list the DX as a Turbo'ed motor. Is this correct? Another reason it shows as cheaper then?

Thanks for any advise received. Only will be able to talk the Hand Brake into this once so don't want to stuff it up.

elect windows, carpet, nicer bits and pieces.

DX is your BASE model.
ST is mid way - there are different levels of ST too ;)

thanks all.

clears things up a bit! The 4.2 TD seems pretty hard to track down. Any idea on the cost for 1998 - 2000 model. i realise km's is a factor but a ball park will be fine.

I can't say i have seen any around brissie for sale to fit my 20,000 budget

You can always look at a Nissan Safari - grey market import from Japan. In 1992 forward they came with factory turbos. The Safari is essentially a high end model GQ. I have a 1991 Safari Gran Road High Roof LWB (non-turbo ). However, I understand that the factory turbos are pretty weak when compared to the aftermarket turbos. Cheers, John

my 2000 model 4.2 turbo diesel ST wagon set me back $28500 roughly. ($30k on road). bought it 4 months ago, had 95k on it and was bog stock, It had done one or two grey nomad type trips.

Rare as hens teeth but if you hang out, and are possibly willing to travel, you will get one.

Mine took me 3 months to find, and i had to drive 4 1/2 hours (each way) to look at it.

'03-04 models are easier to come by (but usually around $40k plus) as government fleet get rid of them after 2-3 years, eg state emergency service, country fire authority, etc.

Hope this helps.

Matt

mmm. seems my buget will only allow me to get a 3L turbo. The only other option that i would consider is an 80 series cruiser, but it will have heaps of km

Rocking horse shit for that price, but they do come around, 12+ mths ago was offered one for $22k, 2000 model with 200,000klms... should have grabbed it :( But then gain, I got a bargain on my 03 mod :D

and turbo diesel 4.2s came out in 2001, thats why your having issues finding a 98-2000 model Turbo diesel 4.2
