Built the kit, easy
Had it running on a V8 holden with Falcon throttle bodies, alittle bit of friggin around
Definatly worth consideration IMO
They only batch fire (non sequential) but that does not matter much over idle anyway.
Beauty is the adaptability due to open source code
Rover guys use them alot
Their forum is really good (very helpful) Check success stories to see if somebody has already done the same engine www.msefi.com
People tend to shy away because 'tuning is a black art' but it is actually as easy as few Wide Open Throttle runs, come back plug the laptop in and 'fudge the figures in one tyable to ensure the air:fuel ratio is correct accrosss the 'powerband'
cheers

I am installing Megasquirt in my P40 engined MQ to run both fuel and spark. Megasquirt is not a company but a product which you can buy fully assembled, in kit form or make your own by buying the pcb from the designers (Bowling and Grippo) and the rest of the bits from any electronic parts supplier. I doubt that you would save much over a kit by by sourcing the components yourself though.

I assembled mine from a kit supplied by SparknFuel in the States who were very helpful. There are other suppliers listed on the Megasquirt site who are probably just as good.

Assembly is not difficult - my son did it for me! He recommends a good solder station such as available from Dick Smith and to practice on the stimulator board first. This board is used to test the ecu on the bench during the various assembly stages. He did comment that he missed a description of how the circuitry worked such as you get with other electronic kits such as those from DSE.

So far the megasquirt has been the easiest part of the project. The difficult bit has been working out where and how to locate all the parts for the conversion of my basic carb engine to efi and keeping track of the wiring. It pays to keep accurate "as built" drawings. If you are just replacing an ecu it would be a lot easier and I would definitely look at the megasquirt for its flexibility, but keep in mind that it is essentially a diy system, so you have to do some figuring out yourself. For example we had to work out how to run the ignition off a Pertronix ignitor. Lots of help is available though on the forums (someone checked our proposed Pertronix circuit for example) and you do end up with a much better understanding of how things work. 6 months ago I knew nothing about efi, now I am almost ready to fire up a system.

And thanks Wayne for your encouraging comments re tuning.

David_S - whats the postage like for the MS kits from the states?

I was going to go megasquirt for my supercharger setup that i want to install next year. Was either going that or EFI off a Vitara (i have a sierra). EFI was 500 bucks complete.
MS is stand alone isnt it? (eg. doesnt require standard ECU?)

I bought Megasquirt II V3 PCB kit for $US250 (that's the ecu kit), a relay board kit which is really helpful if starting from scratch for $US65, stimulator board kit $US40 and splashed out on a LC-1 wideband oxygen sensor and controller for $US200. Postage for the lot USPS Airmail parcel post was $US44. In NZ I had to pay GST of 12½%.

If I can't get the megasquirt going :x I can still use the LC-1 for tuning my old carb as the LC-1 reads the AFR directly with a laptop connected.

And yes MS is a standalone ecu which can control both spark and fuel.
