FJ-40 axles under a series?

After reading up on all the Toyata to Rover axle case conversions:
http://seriestrek.com/toyotadiffs.html
and on here and elsewhere I am wondering, wouldn't it be more simple to swap FJ40/55/60 axles entirely under a Series? I'm pretty sure I've heard of it having been done I just can't find out where or who has tried it.
I'm swimming in FJ40 spares because they are a dime a dozen here in the states due to the fact that they rust into nothing. It is a simple matter to pick one uo for free-$200.
Anyone tried this or seen it done?
Thanks!

I picked up a set a while ago. I wouldn't run them.
sure the axles and diffs are strong - but compared to a rover assembly as a whole they really are shit. Cheap and strong though.
I was really dissapointed in them.

Several rovers here in NZ are running 40 series axles. I decided on a full floating rear 40 series, and a hilux diff head, and a front hilux axle for mine. Mainly for ground clearence reasons

I guess I'll give it a try, I already have them so it won't cost me anything other than the time and effort. I can replace the Birfields with Longfields if they prove to be an issue. The track width looks to be perfect and upgrades to brakes are readily available here very cheaply. I can probably swap to F+R discs for 1/3 the price it would cost me to convert the front rover axle. The stock drums are bigger than an 88's to begin with so they might be fine as is.
We didn't get the full floating 40's here. :(
F'n_Rover-
you have a 435 mated to the Series T case? Mmmmmmmm... I'm going to try to adapt a SM420 to the Rover t case this spring- the 435 is something else I'd considered.

Dosen't the 420 have a big hump sticking out where the rover front output housing needs to be? (just looking at pics - looks to be an issue)
Getting rid of the rover box is like taking off a smelly, dirty pair of socks. You just feel soooo good after

Yes, that hump onm the side encloses the revers gears or something like that. It may be a problem. Depends on the clearance there- it is a fairly common swap for jeeps and FJ40s here in the states and I think the FJ's need to have the hump trimmed a tad. I don't know anyone who has done one in a rover yet so I guess I'll find out first hand.
I'm tired of having a pi$$ poor crawl ratio in Rovers- need something that actually crawls.
here you can see how tight it is up against a TLC TC:

There is a guy in Sydney that has put FJ60 axels under his SII. Little more track width which helps. There may be an issue with the RHS spring perch location.

FJ60's SPOA with 2" spacers on Landcruiser offset 15x8 rims.
I'm currently in the process of moving them over to another series ute but in the normal SUA configuration. Like this it should be a breeze. The FJ40 axles end up sitting like a stocker when you run the normal split rims. The front spring perches line straight up with the springs.

cool!
You guys have already seen this haven't you?

He changed more than I want to but his build is kind of interesting
also ran across this last night with regard to np435:

Sm420/465 are 10 spline also, not sure if that will make those tranny waps similar or not. I haven't had a chance to collect a tranny yet to try that aspect of the conversion.
In the end I want to build an ex MOD 109 into a 1 ton type 109, on 9.00 16s (or similar diameter tires) HD truck 4 speed with granny 1st gear etc. Engine choice is still up in the air...[/quote]
