TURBO PROBLEM

I recently bought a turbo from the sale section on this forum.
I was told that it was a t3/t4 Garret turbo with a turbonetics rear housing but i could not look at it myself as it was in Sydney. Anyway i ended up buying the turbo and it was delivered pretty quick.

Well today (around 6 weeks after i bought it) i took the turbo to Advanced turbo Performance in dandenong road to get some gaskets and fittings and straight away the guy told me that it was a chinese copy :( He also said that it will probably last untill the end of the driveway!!!

Now what do i do? Do i ask for my money back? Do i get a second opinion on the turbo? Can i send any1 on here pics for another opinion????

Any help would be great!!

Jimmy

If it was sold as a genuine 'Garrett' brand turbo, and it is a chinese cheap copy, get your money back.

Well i have just sent him a pm and a text (at work cant call right now) and waiting for a reply.
It was definately sold as a genuine Garrett ball bearing turbo with a turbonetics rear housing. i would not ahve paid good money for a cheap turbo.

The only details i have of this guy are his name and bank account numbers.

yeah i know :(

Was more interested in a second opinion on the turbo itself. the guy at the shop was a bit of a wanker so i'm not 100% sure if he was just bignoting what he had in his shop.

Most of these things aren't as bad as a lot of people try to make out. In fact, in the performance import scene, there are some guys that are using the cheap Chinese KKR turbos with some pretty impressive results. Besides, at this point what have you got to lose by giving it a go?

I'm scared of something breaking and my engine getting some nice metal pieces inside it!!

If i can get my $$$ back i will but i might still try putting it on and see what happends (fingers crossed). It does have water and oil lines so maybe its not THAT bad.

i could also keep boost at around 8psi to try and prolong its life

Yes very true......That is one good thing i like about most of the 4wd workshops that i ahve been to. They are not there to have a go at you but rather help you out and give you ideas on what you could do.

Thanks for the input

hummm seems pretty odd.

As far as I know there's only 3 major makers of turbos and garret make 85% of the total market for making turbos.

HKS don't make their own turbos they buy them from garret and then mod them then sell them on as their own turbo, I think turbosmart here are in the same boat as well.

Do you know what the brand is you might be able to look up the website etc.

Just re-read the post, I'd say it simply the above deal, slightly modded turbo.

actually mistubishi make more than 90 percent of all turbos.... garrett are mitsus, apexi and HKS are aswell... apexi make an RX6 turbo which is a reflowed gt35R with a new compressor and exhaust.

turbosmart use the garret/mitsu housing with there own centre and they polish the housing to make it there own.

KKK turbos are awsome, the horsepower heroes run them as they make some of the biggest. porsche use kkk and i think, THINK saab do aswell. have weak seals that wear out quick.

so youll probably be fine with the copy as itll just have some actual chinese stamps on it not just an english stamp ontop. have a TURBO shop look at it and give you a proper answer on what it is like. arb might check it for you i dont know, just find someone you trust to check it out and then send it back if its sick
