Swivel hub Seal Change

I have leak on the passenger side (well our driver side, as we drive on the wrong side) of the front axel around the swivel hub. I have read a few of the posts, and due to lack of experience and time, I am going to ask a garage to carry out the repair. :?

The truck has 130,000 km, all by me and is coming to 11 years of age.

Would it better that I overhaul the front hub, by replacing all the bearings, hubs, etc? And should I do both sides if I overhaul one side?

do both sides, the rebuild kit comes with everything for both sides. while the garage have it apart they should be checking the serviceability of everything that is not required to be replaced in a simple rebuild.
eg: hubs, wheel bearings, stub axles etc

Embryo thanks, but I dont think we get the rebuild kits as you do in OZ, so I will have to get original Nissan Parts for this. But Our parts are cheaper than what you pay for in Oz.

yeah sweet dunno what a genuine niss one is worth but non genuine ones go on ebay for around 200 bucks i think, dunno if their any good either maybe soneonelse can shed some light on it. postage shouldnt be too dear, just a thought see how you go.

Oil leak from front hub scraper seals is usually a driveshaft seal that has gone . It allows oil to come through from diff and outa the seal. Just get the axleshaft seals too and do the lot. More work more $$.

The swivel pin bearing races also may need replacing--depending on how much work the truck has done on rough roads. If this is the case, then there are small seals above the bearing races that will also need replacing. The work is relatively easy to do with the right tools, but time-consuming..

Thanks for the advice. I need more help from the experts who have done the overhauls. As I have got quote for the labour which I am happy with, but I know I can get the Original Nissan parts cheaper, but I dont know which parts to get for the overhaul.

So could you list the parts that I should get and handover to the garage for the overhaul, if there are any extra parts needed, I will let the garage buy those as need be.

The main bearing plus top and bottom swivel or kingpin bearings are Koyo items. These can be got at a bearing supplier about one third of Nissan prices............they are same items. The top and bottom swivel bearings have a seal around them which Koyo presses in especially for this 4x4 application.
Here in UK I couldn`t get the rubber seal version from bearing supplier so I fitted the plain one without the rubber seal.........not an issue just pack with high quality bearing grease. There are a couple of other little needle bearings in the hub. Don`t have the bearing numbers offhand but you can do a search. While you are in there you may as well get the GU type locknut instead of the old one with the bent tabs. It is much superior although check that someone has not done it already before you buy.

I just did the swivel hub overhaul on my GQ at home.
I got the Koyo kit from Bitz4Cars on Ebay for $109.
It had new wheel bearing seals too.
My wheels bearings were ok so I just cleaned and repacked them. Got the disc's machined while they were off and put in new pads too.
Always replace bearings with the supplied outer races (cones) too. My swivel hub bearing cones had slight corrugations in them.

Basic tools you need are:
Metric socket set
Metric spanners
Pliers
Circlip pliers
Hammer :twisted:(for love tapping the tie rod ends out)
Torque Wrench
Pin Punch
Tie wire (for holding the brake calipers)
Multigrips
Grease gun
Beer (about a slab will do)

As Woop said its a time consuming job, especially for me whose never touched a swivel hub before and doesn't have a manual but I got heaps of the right info off this forum and 4wd Monthly.

It doesn't leak or get slight wobbles now and I gave it shit at a 4wd park on the weekend with no drama's so it was a job well worth doing.

Sudso, thanks for the info, but I am going to let the garage to the repair. Over here in Dubai, we dont get the kits like you do. But I would be interested to know if you can supply a detailed list of what comes in the kit, so I can get a quote for the parts from Nissan and compare. Our nissan parts are cheaper than out in OZ.

Ok from the Nissan FAST system you will more than likely need these bits:

2 x Seal GREASE, KNUCKLE--part# 40579
2 x Seal,OIl inner drive--Part#40563
4 x Plug assy--Part#40040
4 x Bearing Assy,Knuckle--Part#40615
2 x Seal,Dust--Part#40227
2 x Lockwasher--Part 40264M (wont be required if your truck uses the screw type lockwasher system.
