Extended Bump Stops?

i was told the other day that if i extended my rear bump stops down by 50mm that would negate the need to chop my rear quarters again. I have seen it mentioned in the past, and yes i used the search function

My Patrol has a heap of down travel, would extending the bump stops be beneficial? extending both stops would take about 30 minutes...... there would be a whole day sorting the rear quarters.
the amount of travel up into the wheel well
the current problem
That wheel would have probably dropped another inch before it lifted off the ground..... the other side was jammed into the back of the wheel arch and i didn't want to push it too hard

I'm pretty sure it would work Tony. I'm going to lengthen my bumpstops to stop mine touching at the front of the rear wheel arch. It wont touch once the spacers are in but I don't wont to put them in until it's engineered. (9inchs of lift & 37s would look silly)
I'm also of the apinion that it will keep the 4wd more stable when flexing up because the wheel wont get as much of a chance to tuck under as it normally would therefore keeping it more level. Though I could be wrong here.
Cheers Mick.

I'd put the days effort in to cut the quarters. If you can use the travel you have why not? seems like a waste to me otherwise.

That doesn't make any sense to me

yer use all of your wheel travel dude

maybe extend if they are bottoming out your shocks, are they?

id extend the bumpstops, as youll probly find that the tyre is jamming inside the guard. mine jams up so hard it stops the wheel turning, making the other side break into wheel spin

i don't think it's bottoming the shocks, although they are long enough to require me to retain the top of the spring and make guides to make sure they don't pop out under full flex. At full droop, i could probably pull a coil out.

i say put in the effort, and cut the guards, then check to see if the current bump stops are doing there job and not bottoming out the shock, then if needed adjust them to save shocks,
also, if you can pull your coil out under full flex i would be putting coil retainers top and bottom, as im not a fan of coil dropout setups, there is a reason but for the life of me i cant think of it at the moment, mind blank

thats pretty long as you have quite high springs too

the shocks were ordered as far as i know for 6" lift. I think from memory the rear shocks were 780mm long at full extension, i would have to look through my buildup thread.... i know i posted it somewhere. I'm in 2 minds to whether i retain the top and bottom of the coils...... or to retain the top and make guides for the bottom. If i can get more work done to it tomorrow i might go out and flex it up and see wether or not i can bottom out the shocks.

Retain top and bottom as the tension on the spring means the weight of your diff and wheel is helping to hold the car to the ground. It can be the difference between nearly going over and going belly up.
It also stops the horrible clunking sound every time the spring re-seats.

Does look silly doesn't it.
I chopped the back of the arch a bit more and it no longer hits. But it doesn't look as good either.

I wasn't actually refering other peoples patrol with that lift and 37s but my patrol in particular. I've cut mine into a duel cab and have fibreglass front guards which are cut to run 42s. So when I put the 37s on to drive it on road it looks like i've got a 6 inch lift to run 31s.

i'm going to extend them today after i get a few measurements. A friend has extended his by 6" with 7" coils and he has no dramas with flex at all. I'll get pictures.

to make a guide for the top of the spirng just get some 80 series bump stops and bolt them inside the top coil hat.

i'd cut the quarters every day of the week. If you play hard you'll just end up getting hooked up on them or cave them in anyway

why stop at the quarters, extra cab chop it and i promise you will never have the problem with your rear guards again

are you trying to get me divorced?

I finally got the Minister for War and Finance to agree to let me re-gear the diffs....... 38" tyres on 3.9 diffs makes things a little hard on the highway, even with a V8

Including the purchase price of the vehicle, i have spent over 20 grand already..... don't want to be pushing my luck too far
