Hi
Looking to update my old 40 series and I have located a 96 GXL in great nick. It doesn't have a turbo though with 230,000. The owner has had it serviced every 5000km.
I want to use it for towing camper trailer and general 4x4 use.
Would I miss the turbo? Do you have any feedback on this motor?

Yes you will miss a turbo...but the good news is these motors love em too.
Good year model, good buy

A mate of mine suggested that if it is in great nic and i can get it at a good price then go for it. He commented that if I felt it needed a turbo then we could always fit an after market job.
Not having much to do wuth diesels buis 230,000 ok for this model? It has been servicedevery 5000km

If its been serviced every 5000, then 230,000 is no problems. I dont miss the turbo on mine unless towing

yep these things pull hard nat atmo but adding extractors and a 2.5i exoust and snorkel makes a good improvment.

Agree with above well serviced HZJ - 230K kms, no problems.
Best thing headers/extractors and exhaust, but keep the mainfold in case you add a turbo later. When adding turbos make certain you get them tuned properly otherwise you can stuff the pistons when doing contiuous hard work like towing big loads. Father tows a big caravan and has just found this out the hard way. Engine needs complete overhaul :(

Thanks. Have to wait for the dude to get back from Hols to inspect. He has 19,000 on it. Thought of offering 17,000 as a starter.
Any hard core negotiators out their to offer any advice? i know how precious people are about their 4x4. I am one myself

Cobber....17k will buy you alot of 4wd. Go to ebay, and put in landcruiser....thre is a turbo diesel auto sahara starting at 17k...electric difflocks etc....its only a 93....but alot of cruiser for that price....i would prefer to pay 19k for one with alot of service records, than 12 for a dog that needs fixing....but just be aware that a 100 series gxl diesel is only 25k these days, and if you dont have a trade in, i would seriously consider going to the nearest pickles auction for a diesel 100 series....
Unlike older 4bs the 80/100 dont rust (unless they have been in a mine site) and all mechanicals are usually serviced by the gov dept every 5000kms
