really bad steering shake 80 series
I'm stumped my 80 has a really bad steering shake which is really dangerus only started when I put my 4" lift & 315/75/16 (35's) tyre's on and has been doing it more than usual lately
it happens intermittently at varieing speeds generally caused by small bumps in the road and is violent when it happens the steering wheel rips from my hands goes side to side sometimes the only way to stop it is to slam on the brakes and slow right down
to try and stop it I have
fitted a rtc steering dampner
replaced the wheel bearings
& king pin bearings
ive had tyre's rotated, wheel align and wheel balances
nothing has stopped it
If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it

Shouldnt be a problem on a 94...earlier models cracked....but never say never...check the studs on the lower swivel housing to steering relay arms ...r they all tight, none missing?
Common with an 80 aswell ..... then the panhard rod bushes....sometimes a little play there will give you problems.....lastly, jack up and spin the wheels, no eggs off the tyres??? from previous gutter mounting???

Steering Shackes
I know the problem very well. I had the same issues and spent months chasing it. Like you new steering dampers, radius arm bushes, tie rod ends, rebuilt king pins, alignments, balances, etc, etc.
Your problem like other have said is likely to be related to your panhard. I changed the top bushes, problem went away instantly. Had a bitch fight with the bottom one and a big thanks to Driveline services at Archerfield, we finally got the bottom one changed after metling the old bush out, griding the head of the bolt and some percusion maintenace (read big hammer). However the death sudders returned. Tighted the bolts up a little more and problem gone. YEAH!!!!!!!!
No more scaring the shit out of the other traffic and any of my passengers.
Stinger,
Locked, lifted, armour plated poverty pack 80 with a hair dryer....

I also no this problem very well and spent 6 months trying to fix it at the time i was running 35 claws with external bead locks, i have a five inch lift, the first thing that fixed it was toyota panard bushes then it come back then a rtc dampener which made it worse, i then put the radius arms on top of diff very easy mod and got the castor right without huge castor plates and the tie rod is clearing arms and diff youll no this problem if you've got a reasonable lift, i spent countless hours on outher things but in the end i fitted 2 normal dampeners and made a new panard with a toyota bush one end and a god quality rod end on the other end , i was bit worried how long the rod end was gunna last but its done about 10,000klms so far and have never had the shakes good luck with it
the tyres are cooper st's I have just adjusted the RTC steering dampner and it seems to have gone will post up soon after I do abit of driving see if it rears its ugly head againscotyz wrote:WHAT SORT OF TYRES ,IF THERE A RAG TYRE THEY TEND TO DO THAT A LOT IF RUNNING PRESSURES LOWER THAN ABOUT 25 PSI

That certainly was a close clall Jimbo .. imagine if that had of let go at 100 kph. Lucky break (yes yes pun intended) it let go at super slow speeds.
Mate I hate to say it but Bazzle is right, there was plenty of advice above referring to the panhard bushes and maybe a good visual inspection would have identified the problem and prevented it.
Anyway, I guess alls well that ends well so a lesson to us all about checking these things out comprehensively.
Cheers

I would like to thank nelso for welding a new ring on the end of the panard thanks mate
Tough dog would not replace it under warranty as I bought it 2nd hand
and I did check the bush on the panards but the crack must have not been visable at that time just lucky it broke in the bush and not on the road could have been really messy + I had the kids in the car 2
