Price advice - Hilux
im looking at buying a late model hilux and am after some advice on how much i should be paying.
all 3 of these that im looking at are 3L diesels, 4wd single cab, on road prices
4/00 47,000kms for $27,500 - alloy tray
1/00 82,000kms for $26,500 - alloy tray
11/97 47,000kms for $26,500 - steel tray
do these prices seem reasonable? how much could i reasonably talk them down by? anything special to look out for when buyin a new hilux?

Are you planning on 4x4ing with it? any serious stuff?
The IFS will restrict the amount of serious 4x4ing you can do with it's VERY limited travel.
I have a 97 xtracab with IFS. If i knew how useless IFS is offroad i would'nt have bought it. Although after putting a detroit diff lock in the front it's improved it's 4x4 ability a huge amount.

thats a good point - ill be doing a bit of 4x4, however also quite a lot on dirt roads/forrestry and some beach work so the IFS is attractive from that perspective.

im not going to be doing any rock climbing or anything like that though ill keep diff lockers in mind if i get more serious. thanks for your help

everyone bags out the IFS! its done me fine, quite surprising how it goes once ya know how to drive, it will get you just about anywhere with a desent bit of effort!!

DO NOT GO THE IFS!!!!!!!!
Yes it has some good points(what i don't know) but for any type of 4 wheeling than live axles the way to go.
Live beam will work just as good on road, dirt road as IFS.
However live axle will SHAIT all over ifs when it comes to beach and medium to hard off-roading.
If you want to do a spring lift this is near impossible to do on a ifs.
If you want more wheel travel the live axle will out do the IFS pants down.
You would be lucky to get 4 inches of travel out of a IFS hilux.
Also beam axles are heaps stronger.
Look at all the guys doing Live axle conversions on there IFS rigs.
I had a Toyota surf, now i know people say there cheaply made but the whole front end is nearly identical as the new hilux's, i busted 2 front ring and pinion's in a space of 10 months and the third had cracked teeth.
On the other hand i had a 95 hilux single cab for five years and never blew a diff or anything(drove it just as hard as i drove the surf)

handles well, and goes awesome on both the beach and the dirt track!!
live axles are for the hardcore crowd, so id stay well away from those big heavy things!!
they have more unsprung weight, therefore take longer to stop, they dont offer the drooped clearance that a IFS diff has 8)

Good one Bj, this guy is about to waste 25 grand on a IFS hilux, he wants an honest opinion.

if you are remotely considering any of these things:
lift
serious offroading
bigger tyres than stock
then get a truck with a straight axle!! if you dont care about the above three things then what i said still stands
he will not "waste" $25k on a new hilux, they are a good truck and have good reliability (despite being notoriously underpowered) and are a good strong truck!

anyway.... i'd go with the newest one 4/00, offer the dude $26,000 and when he says no, walk away and wait for the words " aww hang on mate!"

i think for what i want at this stage, the IFS lux will do me well.. like i say only moderate 4wd'ing and it will be mainly for a work truck. when i want to start rock crawling, ill go and buy a TJ jeep 8)
thanks for your advice fellas... im in brisbane by the way, and i usually go out to Narangbah with a mate for 4x4 action in his 4runner... however im heading down south (Nowra) in january to start a new job so ill be keen to see what the 4wding is like down there.
