Took my MQ for a RWC and as expected my RWC guy wants me to get an engineer certificate for the 308 conversion.

Has anyone had any positive experiences with engineers in Melbourne they can share? Or negative too?

Im after an engineer in the northern suburbs preferably.

People keep asking this and we all keep saying Bill MAlkoutsis

x2

x3

etc

but no-one's followed up to confirm he's still doing eng cert's. If he is, he's ur best bet for sure.

Does anyone have any experiences they wish to share like the procedure that needs to be taken when getting a v8 engine engineered?

What should I expect I should need to do to have this V8 engineered?

Make sure your brakes are all working 100%, make sure engine mounts are done right, and thats about it for an MQ i believe. You wont have emisions stuff to worry about.

He may ask for brake upgrades, but i doubt it.

If it generally looks like a heap, ie rust everywhere, most engineers will avoid it like the plague, but if its a well maintained vehicle it wont be hard to get engineered at all.

Yeah mines pretty clean, my mechanic who did the rwc (and needs the engineers cert) said the conversion was done well. It looked pretty good to me too.

My mate has had his car looked at by an engineer and he said the engineer wanted to go over every ADR applicable to the car to complete the engineers certificate. Is this true?

I was sorta expecting they look at the engine, mounts etc, its on lpg so no emissions test, do a brake test, then hopefully pass my car :)

Normally yes, for all tose that apply to that model as it goes in the report.

People who do your roadworthy aren't entitled to ask for a engineers unless they deem the vehicle unroadworthy, but in which case they rather you get it roadworthy as to produce a cert. that from an extract of the vicroads paperwork, but thats from over 6 years ago, when i built my first car and had to find loopholes to get it registered, now i just start with a registered car :D

Spoke to a couple of engineers today, $650 and $700 were what i was quoted.

Sounds pretty straight forward, they just want to inspect it and make sure the engine has the correct clearances from engine bay components.

A little more than I hoped/expected but there you go..

Of course they are either on holidays or busy now because they were on holidays and I wont get it done by Australia day, let alone this week! :(

It always takes a while with these things. When I had the V8 engineered, the guyy looked at it for 10 min, drove it for 5 min, told me to replace the flexible brake lines and get a sound test and said "That'll be $600 + GST"

Had some other work done by Bill Malkoutsis, went to see him first so he know what I was intending to do and how it was before (he didn't charge for that half hour) and he gave me a sheet outlining his charges per hour. It was about $130 an hour if I remember correctly and ended up costing me around $450

That was a few years ago so don't quote me!!

bill's still charging around that mark!

he'll also want you to stick the car on a weigh bridge, fully and 50/50 front rear

Almost.... every ADR applicable to the conversion...
if you lose control due to and over powered/badly weighted/under-braked car that has been engineered, Kill someone, end up in court... they'll bring up the engineer, scrutinise the car and if even a single ADR hasnt been adhered to the engineer gets the manslaughter charge not you.

It's absolute worst super pessimstic scenario, but it's how the engineer has to think so they dont end up in jail.
