hill confusion ??

Hey guys

well i was out wheeling the other day was taking on a decently steep little hill nothinng to serious. anyway i got nearly to top clutch fully out and foot nearly full throttled in low 1st. and something kinda gave up in the car it stoped so i clutched back in and rolled back down fairly fast.

it actually gave me a fright as i would of thaught the tyers would spin before the engine stoped spining them.

there was a bit of a smell but i coudnt put my finger on it.

my question is what happened in there was it the clutch giving way ?
as this would of been potential very dangerious on a bigger hill.

could this be caused by driving with no gearing on 32s ? will gearing prevent this ?

Cheers guys very interested in the answer as this is preventing me from trying some stuff.

Sounds like she just ran out of puff coz you gearing is too tall with 32's.

Time for some tranny gears.

I suppose you were on a high traction surface and probably had the tyres aired down as well.

The weakest part of the equation here was probably your clutch........

It must have started to slip hence the smell you had at the bottom of the hill.

Gearing will allow you to attack obstacle not a full throttle saving your clutch in the long run...

You mean with 32's and standard gears you can get up any incline :shock: :shock: Are you sure you've got a 1.3.

He did say at full throttle in low 1st. ;) Afterall it is the only way to drive when the gearing is too tall. :lol:

This is not an uncommon thing when you are waiting (or have not yet realised the need) for reduction gearing. It hasn't damaged the vehicle (except for clutch wear) but the pride really takes a beating when a stock Zook then drives straight past you.

Not having a go at you, but when you pushed the clutch back in this was a big misstake. You broke the number one rule for hill climbing.
Brakes first, let engine stall. Than you can select reverse. Start engine with foot off clutch while releasing brakes. Practice on a small low hill first so you get a feel. Or join a club ( best option ) as its best to have someone show you.

fairly sure mines a 1.3 but yes defently iv been using 32 simex ets with standard gearing for about a month been on a few 4x4 trips. heres the hill i was climbing.
dosent look that bad but it was pretty steap.

Calmini 5.14:1 gears will go nice with your 32" Just remember to get full bearing kit aswell when ordering. :roll:

Calmini retro bearing kit, Zute. Part No SS5026, $135USD ($180-190 AUD)afterall you already get the rest with the Calmini gears. (Calmini full bearing kit is $199USD). Plus Freight

Or best price I have seen so far for full transfer case overhaul kit in Australia is $342.70 from Bayswater Bearing / Bearing Wholesalers (quoted today)

Install will vary. Anything from $300 upwards.

If you have the tools, knowhow (or a mate who has done it before) and the confidence, you can do it yourself. I know Calmini provide good instructions I would assume RockHopper do too (correct me if I am wrong).

No, no experience at all, I don't know what I am talking about. I don't have gears, honest I dont ;) ;) I don't even have a transfercase in the Zook at the moment :D :D :D

so i need to buy the gears around 1000 bearing kit 150ish and 300 for install tasty anything alse gonna pleasantly suprise me ?

Calmini 5.14's work well with my 32's. Easy install if you are mechanically inclined. Deffinatley do the complete bearing kit too.

You bought 32" tyres and didn't bank on gearing?

Or you could save money and just get a genuine LockRight from the US, put the gears in, aw hell get two lockrights.....................and still have change.

Richmond Gears Lockright, $280 including freight to my door in 5 days from Rocky Road. Hard to beat. :D :D :D

I had the same problem with 31's and standard gearing, Problem was the gearing was crap. I have a 1.0L and it use to just run out of revs as traction was to high and revs to low.

I Now have Series 3 Rockhoppers (6.11:1) and i think it was the best investment i have made and now my clutch thanks me for it.

I also now have a Richmond Lock Right in the front that i got from the states and was only A$285 delivered to my door.

I've got 30's and need geraing! But then again i've been going out wheelin with jeep wranglers that have an awsome low range sence i was little!

The only thing that has betten the wrangler's low gear is a suzi with reduction gears!

I'm getting 31's and gears at the same time. Would never of thought of going 32's and no reduction gears!

VICELORE can you send me a pm with were that was? I'm hanging for some mud again!

its suprisingly allright. not that diferent from stock. well not at the level of driving im at.

its defently noticable on the freeway tho. Creating the vicelore train everywehre. lol

money is a object i am prepared to spend another 3-4 k on the car. but ofcause if i can get something just as good for 2k then i would go that. its more a matter of time rather than money.

the reason i looked past auto lockers was that they disengage when u turn the steering ??

i dont like the idea of always trying to keep it straight and locked. forgive me if im wrong. just how i thaguht it worked.

suzuki boy that was like one of the only places there with mud and the place is gonna be a block of houses really soon i think. but i will pm ya the adress.

Go for a drive in a airlocked vehicle with the lockers on and try and turn, not a chance, esp in something light like a zook. When using air lockers you only turn the front on when you absolutely need it and off as soon as possible. The rear alone will push you straight on high traction surfaces.

WTF. No more drugs for you :). Auto lockers work with the wheels turned or straight.

so whats so much better about air lockers ? the fact u can turn them off ?

why would it matter if your lockers break at the right time anyway ?

Search on auto-lockers and air lockers. The thing that makes air lockers great is you can swtich them off and on when you need them. Auto-lockers can cause bad raod maners, aswell as not disengaging when you dont want them locked (tight turns with front locker for example) Auto lockers are great for the $$ (IMHO - under $300 for good locker imported from states). You have to weight up the cost versus product and what you want so you can make the decision. What do you mean lockers "break" ??? I tend to enjoy it when my lockers (or my zook in general ) doesnt break :)
