What the big Rubber thingy with the wire on one side?
I think it's a damper of some sort. maybe it stops your axle falling off on extreme articulation?

Its called the "Harmonic Balancer", I took mine off a couple of years ago without any negative effect. My DD Disco still has one though...will keep that on it...exceeding 160 km/h regularly, and I need all the balancing I can get

Like DiscoDino said its "Harmonic Balancer" HSE use then Disco's use them. It's used to take any vibration out of the drive line.... Or something to loose if you use it off road :)

Mate of mine tore his off while in the Wanangatta.

Was a bit vibro on the way home but nothing dramatic.

I removed mine off a 2" lifted 3.9 V8 Disco and have driven 10,000ks at various speeds with no noticeable effect/difference.
The balancer is cast iron, the rubber mount looks the same as a V8engine mount, so 0ne spare still att to vehicle if needed.
Also if you have headers fitted they may contact balancer under susp compression another reason to remove.
