Outer Limits 4x4 Board

G day all.
Im new to the pajero thing so be gentle.
My wifes car is a 99 model NL 3.5 Exceed. I gather the engine is a DOHC as indicated by the belt cover up to both rocker covers. Is this correct as to idetify them against a sohc?
Also there is a device attached to the front diff that i cannot identify. It sits to the drivers side of the front pumkin behind the axel tube and has like a small looking shock boot over it with a heap of wires and vacuum hoses coming of it.
After trying to find a spot the other day to mount an air compreser and tank in the thing i realised that one of the only spots for this is behind the main battery next to the fire wall. But for a second battery it appears that the air con lines are in the way and also the charcoal canister and does not seem to be anywhere to relocate these items. Does anybody have an exceed that has faced this problem?
The air pump i managed to mount inside the second row seat and run all the lines to a 2 litre air tank mounted up behind the front bar on the front cross brace below the radiater. (Seat inclosure was all insulated as well against heat from compresser) Hope some can help with these issues.

Yours will be a SOHC - there are still 2 cams, just one on top of each bank of cylinders.

The device onto the front diff activates the diff disconnect for 4WD. I recently pulled one of these to bits - just for a look. Behind the cover is a air operated ram which pushes or pulls on a sleeve to join two gears. Hence the two air lines going into the housing. The wires are for the (green) dash lights which you will see flash momentarily when going into or out of 4WD.

As for the carbon canister - this is where I moved mine too - the bolt holes were even there, just bought another meter of hose and a couple of joiners.

Yeah there is no room over the other side of the engine bay as being an Exceed its full of heaps of useless crap and where you have placed yours is where my abs is.
So as far as the diff actuater even if the vehicle is in 2wd the front prop shaft still turns but its the diff that is disconected?

My air compressor is mounted where your ABS is, the charcoal canister was relocated to the bull-bar.

In 2wd the front propshaft isn't driven by the transfer case. The LH side of the diff is driven by the left wheel, but the RH side of the diff is disconnected from the right wheel. So the planetary gears spin rather than turn the crownwheel and pinion (and front prop shaft) which theoretically saves a little fuel.

The front shaft will continue to turn yes, because only the drivers side axle disconnects. The only way to stop the cv's, diff & driveshaft turning is Free wheeling hubs which a number of us have done.

The disconnect is off to the side of the diff and only disconnects the one side, the diff is still connetced - hold on i'll dig up some pic's I took.

Engaged - This is the fail safe position and when you turn off the engine the front diff engages as no vacuum to hold it disconnected

And as for your carbon canister - will it be missed? My last car - Turbo Subaru - I just joined the in and out together and threw it away.....

Yeah as far as the charcoal canister goes ill keep it in there as it does keep the vehical totally legal. Not that anyone will ever notice but my luck if i take it out then ill get pulled over by transport and theyll bloody get me for it . But i do like the idea of putting it up behind the bullbar next to where ive put the 2 litre air tank as thats the only spot there seems to be any room at all. And i do want to leave the spot behind the main battery for a second battery. I am trying to turn this car into a good trip vehical as i got rid of my patrol some time ago now to buy an Ftruck for towing the buggy around. Although the pajero towed it with ease. But bloody hell theyve just got no room for anything in the exceeds
Also just wondering why everyone only list a 1.5 inch lift for the NLs
They seem to be the same vehical as the previous model just outside styling a bit diffrent?
