you have to get a rear sump and pickup i think the efi 5ltr commodore motors have a rear sump

ps i will ask my mate as he has a efi 5ltr motor (308 block) in he's mq patrol will let you know

Gday mate ,,
I have just converted mine and it was easy as ,,

Although i am running it behind the standard nissan 4 spd box ,,

My sump has the the pickup placed in the middle of it , and the extractors are tucked up tight to the sump ,, the right hand extractor runs inbetween the sump and the flywheel ,,

It looks like my sump has had a bash from the diff hitting it ,, this was like it when i bought it and since putting the motor in my car it has not hit it yet ,,
pm me for pics if you want ,,

There are 2 sumps.

a front sump which all the commodore 304 5 litre motors have.....
and a rear sump, which all of the older holden (HJ,HQ,WB) etc have.....

now, one thing to note, they have a different oil pick up as well. the rear sump is a longer pickup that drops into the sump at the back ( as it bolts to the block at the front.... the front sump ones still bolt to the block at the front but drop in more in the middle of the sump.

so when converting to rear sump, you need to remove the oil pickup as well and put one from a rear sump. if you try to use the front sump pickup with a rear sump, you will have no oil pressure as the pickup wont be in the bottom of the sump to get oil.

you can get rear sumps from any old holden motor, all red motors and blue motors had them. the black motors and injected motors have front sumps. all are interchangeable.

next thing is next.... are you intending on converting to a 5 speed or an auto at any stage or sticking with the 4 speed?

i ask this as the 4 speed sits soo far back that if you bolt a 5 litre to it, i think you will find you will get away with a front sump anyway as long as you mount the motor high enough it will never hit the diff cause the motor sits back because of the 4 speed. If you put a 5 speed in then it will hit.

you choice all in all but eitherway, the info is here for you. i have done half a dozen v8 conversions now and a few chevs as well soif you have any further questions feel free to ask.
