Hey guys, got any tips when it comes to making a couple of bench tops that fold out from the barn doors on a GQ?

What plate would u use?
Would u use wire or chain to hold the edges?

What kind of latch would you recommend?

Got any pics of barn door benches?

This is how they ended up after today... Still a bit rough on the edges and on the rear of the plate.

What do you recommend i do on the back of the plate? (As in the surface you see when its closed) Carpet? Vinyl? paint? Its aluminum, what would make it look nice? lol...

All of the materials I purchased from bunnings apart from the screws and bolts.

HERE IS SOME ADVICE: If you live in Melbourne and you need bolts, nuts washers, of varying strengths, sizes, heads, goto:

Economy Bolt Co. (Capella Cres, Morabbin, just off cochranes road - They have other stores aswell, i think 1 in dandenong and 1 somewhere north)

I got tappered head, 10mm full length threads in M3 with phillips heads on

them. Also got lock nuts (nylon) and spring washers to suit. (They have alllll the variations, including strength, thread length, thread type, head type) THEY ARE EXTREMELY helpful, no matter how small your needs are, they take the time to make sure you get the right gear.
(Got it all with 3 drill bits for under $10, you can't beat that!)

Bunnings purchases:
10m of Marine steel rope, (still got 7metres left over, PM me if u need it)

covered in plastic insulation. $25
2x latches $12
4x hinges ~$15

Aluminum offcuts were taken from a custom toolbox builder in Chadstone.
Gave him $3 for a cold drink ;)

(Oh and by the way, how do I upload photos directly to the forum???)

... And the reason the bigger door doesnt have the aluminum go all the way to the top is because the fridge will go there!!!

economy bot is on brighton street dandy i think it is behight where the old sheds used to be,

even coventry fastners or even cost less bolts in moorrabbin iv found ok

well if you have carpet in the back id cover the back with carpet, if vinyl cover it with that either way ya do it, myself id put like a u channel over the edges to 1 protect the carpet from been pealed of and 2 dont ripp ya self open on the sharp edges

Here is version 1 of mine, using a plastic chopping board:

For version 2 I replaced the whole backboard with a thin stainless sheet and then made a much more solid table from plywood with a 2mm stainless top. Dont have pics of that but will post some up if anyone is interested...

Here's some of the ones I have done.
The door panel has been replaced with a laminated panel which is easy to clean and if needed can be removed and original panel put back in.
