Well my TD is very sluggish and the problem i think has been gradual and not helped by the fact im running 33's.
starting on hills is very hard to get past 3rd gear at all. seems to have not much go at all. drops from 100-80 uphill quite easily with me droping back a gear aswell
but will rev up to around 3k fine (ive never really reved passed this)
Im not sure if this is common or not
she has 252 thou. snorkel prefilter main filter both new paper elements
fuel filter is going to be replaced soon
she needs a major 250 thou service, had the oils done when i got her so the service for 250 will be due at 252 but will be done when i get back from the USA (i leave in 10 days so not urgent)
next question is what should i expect to pay for the major service and what will she need in general. and can anyone recomend a good place in melb pref SE burbs who could do this for me.
Cheers
Tim

Why don't you do the lubes and filters yourself? It will save you a ton of money. Get yourself a manual. As for lube, you need to change all oils: engine, trany, TC, and difs. You also need to put grease to all nipples - the mechanical variety

. Some people also like to put new fluids in their power steering, brakes and clutch. Just follow the proceedures in the manual.
You power issues are probably related to your fuel system. The fuel filter is probably plugged up. Also, check the filter under the banjo fitting on the top of your injector pump. Dealing with these two filter made an amazing power difference in my truck.
The tappets also need to be looked at during a major service - depending on when they were last adjusted. You can do it yourself or get a shop to do it. If you do it yourself, don't forget a new valve cover gasket. Mine were way out and it also made a bit of a power difference.
If none of this fixes her up, then the next thing I would look at is your injectors and injector pump. However, in your post you did not say anything about a lot of black or white smoke. When was the last time the injectors were inspected, rebuilt or replaced. I think they are suppose to be done every 100,000 to 140,000 kms. I got my new injectors from Hiflo. The price was very good for new injectors - about half of what i would of paid for getting my injectors rebuilt in Canada.
Other major service items are coolant hoses and belts. These are things that you can also do yourself quite easily.
As I don't live in Auss, I can't recommend a shop for you, but I am sure the others can. But like I said, with a manual an a few tools, everything is strait forward.
Good luck.

4.2 will be a bit sluggish on 33's with the hot weather we are having in VIC now. As mentioned, check small gauze filter under banjo fitting on injection pump. Also injectors might need attention if they havent already.

Sorry to hijack, but i wanted to know, do all 4.2's have a gauze filer under the banjo? i have a 93 4.2 and just wanted to know if it would have one? don't want to pull it apart if it don't

My 94 TD42 doesn't have the filter under the banjo bolt.........Doesn't take all that long to pull out and check.......
A turbo really helps with 33's..............
you should try driving a NA auto TD42 up a hill will 33's not fun........

if my speeds are consistant with others im not going to worry to much as im not sure if its normal or im just very slow!
new fuel filter is going on, if i check the banjo fitting on the fuel pump do i need to bleed the pump?
i do normal serviceing myself but every 3 service i get a shop to do because they pick up things i cant/wont.
for the 250 im not sure what she needs aside from oils and a work shop will

Live with the fact that the 4.2 is naturally sluggish.
Even stock turbos. I was dissapointed at first.
You just have to learn to drive it like a real diesel, the old 'wind-up' before overtaking trick if yr used to sml diesels, eg the 3.0L
Worst case scenario I guess think about injectors and injector pump if never cleaned.
But start of simple - service, air filters, etc
