I heard i rumour that the things run slightly lower compression in the 78's 79's than the 100series, anyone know the truth, and show a source of info, much appreciated

Ive always thought they ran more comp, because of no intercooler...i do know they run a stronger piston in the 78/79 due to the no intercooler, so theoretically, a 78/9 motor is a better starting point than a 100.

so what would happen if you intercooled the 1HD-FTE?

The 100 series hdfte is already intercooled, the 78/79 is not. So...the 78/79 have stronger,more heat resistant pistons, so when chasing power and pushing the envelope, a 78/79 motor with intercooler should last longer with higher combustion zone temps. There is a safari intercooler kit made for the 78/79 with d tronic (i think it is safari)

The 1HZ engine is still used in the 78/79 series. Producing 121 kw with a turbo (no intercooler)

The 1 HD FTE engine is used in the 100 series. it has 151 kw, intercooled & has EFI

the 1HZ is a naturally aspirated engine.

1HZ (all) relatively unchanged since its first use in 80 series. Indirect Injected, 12 valves, mechanical injection.

1HDT found in early 80 series, Direct Injected 12valves and mechanical injection

1HDFT found in late 80 series (maybe early 100series?) direct injected multivavle head 24 valves and mechanical injection.

1HDFTE found in 100series Direct Injected, 24 valves, Electronic injection and Intercooled.

1HDFTE found in 78/79series Direct Injected, 24 valves, Electronic injection, No intercooler.

Toyota has never released a turbo 1HZ. Infact I believe all thier turbo engines right back to thier first turbo are direct injected. 12HT is direct injected turbo variant of the 2H, 13BT is direct injected turbo variant of 3B (pretty sure 13bt is direct injected).

Makes you wonder why they didnt just make all there diesels direct injection, especially the 1hz when the 1htd was so alike

Im no diesel mechanic, but by what I understand is that INdirect injected motors dont have to rely on injectors been 100%, while direct injected engines need injectores to be in top shape eg (spray pattern) to combuste properly.

Just what I think... Am I right or wrong?

But direct injection uses the fuel more efficently, so would mean less emissions

I thought they did too....maybe we have both been listening to the same person....or reading overlander mags...anyway Toyota specs have them as being thesame compression.

1HD-T was also used in other markets (countries) in the 100 series, however the 1HD-FT was not, only 80 series. ;)

13bt is direct injected. Toyota did bring out a turbo motor that is indirect injection with a turbo and that is the 2LT, and the 1kzte
