5L to 1KZT or 1KZTE conversion.

Hi all. this may have been asked before but i couldnt find it if it has.
I Own a 1998 model extra cab hilux pretty sure LN172 with a 5L 3Ltr diesel engine. I have just blown my engine up not sure how but it dropped a valve now number 2 piston is in pieces in the bottom of the sump and i have a hole the size of my fist in the inner of the case into the water jacket.
So now im looking for another engine but would like to put a turbo diesel into it. A 1KZT or 1KZTE is what i have in mind. Anyway i have mixed stories about putting them in with regard to how easy they are. So if anyone has done this conversion or knows anything about it could you please help.
I want to know everything you can and cant use from original.
-engine mounts
-gear boxs
-radiator plumbing
etc.
Thanks
Liam

One of my mates has done it and it was not an easy or cheap conversion, sourcing a flywheel cost him 800 alone,im pretty sure the injector pump was a mishion as well because i think he did the te which was an electronic throttle cable, luckily his brother in law owns highway deisel,he had to get a late model bell housing, but yours might be all right as his was a 85 model hilux. He had lots of drama with cooling problems but i cant remember why,it was all sorted in the end.He now has a 5l in a 99 model hilux with a switzer turbo, boost compensator, and a 3 inch exhaust and is getting much the same performance. He talked me out of the 1kzte conversion and we modded the 3l.He even had the engine sitting in his garage as the car got destroyed. If you like i could pass on his phone number as he probably knows more about this conversion than most.cheers Bastard

usually i'm talking people out of doing the 2lt/3l to 1KZTE conversion because its a bit of a mission.
however the later model hiluxs do come out with that motor as standard in the top model so it may not be as hard to do. or course being a 5L not a 5LE means you will have the wiring for the ECU to do.
the throttle cables are different setups depending on of the motor came from a hilux, hiace or surf.

That would be good bastard. im looking at a rolled over wreck with the 1KZTE in it so i would use that gearbox bell housing etc in my car. im just not sure what mods are needed for mounting did your brother inlores bolt straight in. The ECU and wiring side of things should not be a drama as i do that line of work on aeroplanes.

Starting my 5L to 1KZTE conversion engine and gear box are out of my car and engine and gearbox ready to come out of the donor car. Looked into it a bit and should not be to hard of a conversion. Wiring to the ecu should also be easy enough.

What sort of money is it for the wiring harness for them.. my old boy recons thats where the dollars are...
Thanks Chris

A mate of mine is about to start the same conversion on his 93 hilux with a rolled 2004 donor, so far he has been told the engine mounts have to be moved forward. ( so will see how he gets on with the conversion soon )

It's not an impossible jub the way you are doing it with the complete late model vehicle.
The engine mounts are in a different location, so no dramas cut the old mounts off and replace with the donor cars mounts, just get the exact measurements off the donor car before cutting.
If donor vhicle is an SR5 it will have ADD, push button 4x4, no dramas, put the 98 tranfer case on to the later box as long as it is a VF1-F type, chain drive, it should be, but you never known for sure til you look.
As for EfI setup, it is only wiring for the efi that is different, should have the same glow circuit, temp, oil etc. The new ones will be crank angle sensor, TPS, airtemp etc, but basically you just have to pull the harness out and unpick it back the the EMC and it is just a matter off elimination of common wires untill all you have is a separate "EFI" loom.
The fact you have a donor vehicle make this a good job for someone with a reasonable mechanical aptitude, If you didn't have the complete car, it would cost you a fortune in time and effort, good luck with it all.

Ive been priced by my local mechainic for a 1KZ-TE engine, with loom and EVERYTHIGN on it (from a lux, not a prado) for $10,000- thats loom, pump, turb, the works.
Toying with it for my 92 lux...

wow $10000 that is rediculous. Is it a recon engine. Mine was $4500 for a whole wrecked car. With an engine that has done 10000Km. I know that is really cheap but $10000 seems excessive.

Brand new, in a crate, from toyota, with toyota engine warranty....
With loom, turbo, manifolds and injector pump, $10,000 isnt that unreasonable.
