ok, heres the go. i know the pros and cons or diesel vs petrol.

what i want to know is...the cost to get put a turbo diesel donk in a shortie gq. would it be a case of getting a gu motor, or possible a non turbo and sticking an after market turbo on it. what would the cost be?

if i went a v8 it would be the lexus v8..

cheers

I got a second hand Safari turbo kit and fitted that to my 89 TD42. It had done about 180k when fitted. After not very long I increased the boost to 21psi and fitted an intercooler and wound the pump as high as it would go. I then did about 70k with it like that before taking it out to replace with Nissan V8.
In you case I'd either fit a turbo to what you have but if you think you want to go the V8 route then don't piss aroung just do it. As you know they are completly different and aren't really comparable. It just comes down to what you want to do. If you are planning on doing comps then go the light reving alloy V8 way. If it is for club trips, touring etc then stick with the diesel and stick a big snail on it. You'll get almost the same power from the diesel it is just very different power.
V8 $10k +++++++ Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I'm doing most of mine myself and I get a lot of sponsorship support and it will still cost that, but I am turboing it as well.
A standard turbo kit will cost under $5k.
You choose. I've done both and they both have merits.

i've just recently done the petrol to diesel conversion to my wagon gq so if your looking at going the diesel route i've got pretty much every answer you need...... i choose not to add up every dollar i spent on the conversion but i think if you add up all the little bits anid pieces you'd be looking at around $6000. give or take a bit i say. i just waited until the right engine came along which i picked up for 3g (i think, i've spent so much money i can't remember....) but it already had a turbo dynamics kit on it so i just rebuilt the engine myself and went from there. if you go the diesel option just pm me for any additional help!

i currently have the petrol in mine with 310 thousand on it. it might go for a while yet, but without having the full service history....who knows.

i dont like the sound of turbo-ing my current engine, cause if it goes pop, then i have wasted a fair amount of money.

what diesel did you put in yours? turbo or non turbo diesel?

Was looking at both these options myself but for a V8 looking at a Chev V8 diesel from that mob in WA.

IF you have the 4.2 (or even rb30 for that matter) how hard is it to turbo that?

It is heaps less stuffing around, i imagine there are kits for it, you just bolt it on and go! (i know its never that simple but still, its easier/cheaper than changing an engine)

If/when youre original engine dies petrol engines are plentiful and cheap to rebuild.

what would need to be done to strengthen/recon the tb42 enough to handle a turbo?

bearing in mind that my current petrol motor has 310xxxkm's?

i havnt had any first hand experience with the tb42 but from my experience....

1. since its a nissan engine it will probably go forever :)

2. I expect its probably got a 9:1 CR which would be fine for a turbo.

3. Run an intercooler and mild boost (8-12psi) and the engine stock internals should be fine. I would be running EFI with aftermarket ecu if i did the turbo conversion on a tb42.

4. Eventually, even though its a nissan engine, it may need to be rebuilt. Cost for rebuilds vary depending on how much work you do yourself.

Basic costs for the conversion just off the top of my head:

Manifold custom made around $500
T3 turbo 2nd hand $300-400 or reco maybe 1k
ecu and tuning $1000-2000
stock injectors will probably cope with raised fuel pressure so: fuel pressure regulator. $150
fuel pump and surge tank $300
Intercooler and piping $500
oil and water lines $300
exhaust mods $200

So thats like $4k plus maybe an extra grand or two for extra costs that are unforeseen.

adds up quickly eh :P

I guess a lot of those costs you will have if you go an EFI V8 and any late model diesel engine isnt going to be cheap.

Now depending on whether you do things yourself or not will also come into play here because labour to fit a new engine and stuff around with that is going to be huge.
