Buying an 80 - Transfercase problem

Looking at buy a diesel 80 series.
I looked at the weekend (a 94 standard diesel 80), didnt seem to bad, but I was a little put off by the powering steering pump leaking badly, and has been for a while.
So theres about $500, and also when I took it for a run and tested out the transfer case, something didnt seem quite right about it.
Instead of having to lift the stick up to go into low range, once it seemed to just slide straight down from high to low without lifting the stick up.
The guy also said when he got the car at 80,000kms (its now just over 200,000kms), he got a RACV test on the car prior to purchase and they said there was something slightly loose.
But he has never bothered to get it fixed up.
Any ideas what this could be? Im guessing just a bearing or 2 though, but I dont want to get it, and then find out I need reco it or anything when I pull it apart to see what the problem is.
Apart from a couple of pinion seals leaking etc, it didnt seem to bad. He has got reciepts of the work that has been done to it since 40,000kms, and says its has had the oil changed every 5,000kms.
Just wondering whether its worth offering a little less, or look for something else.
Thanks
