Engine Mount (broken?)

I have developed a vibration through the steering wheel at certain revs from the engine after my last trip and as it happens both when driving and when in neutral I'm presuming its either a gearbox or engine mount broken. Does this sound likly? Gearbox one looks fine but what is the easiest way to check if these mounts are broken and if so replace them given that I don't have access to an engine crane? Search found that its usually passenger side which goes first and it does seem to have a bit of movement in it.

When mine went you could pretty much move the motor to one side but not the other! You will be able to tell when you give the motor a good push!

When mine went i hadnt realised and still went wheeling, but i was getting alot of hitting under the bonnet which was the engine tapping on the underneath of the bonnet. After a good look, i realised one side of the engine was in a different possition and could tell it was the mount, couldnt do anything at the time, so used a coat hanger and took it REALLY easy, no hard acceleration or anything like that.

I have just got new mounts as the other broke when i rolled it, but the new ones are a different design and are from america. They are from http://www.roadlessgear.com in the engine section on about the third page. It seems that part of the site is down so i'll try and get a link up when its working again but the bolts are a little bigger and require slight drilling to the cars mounting point to fit. And they have a lifetime replacement, all you have to do is pay for shipping again.

I hope this helps, if you need more detailsask away.

Cheers, Stubbs

When I did an engine mount (Driver Side), I didn't realise that it was in two pieces.
You dont need an engine crane, just a floor jack under the sump.

The vibration could also be a universal in the driveline.

Pretty certain that those mounts are for a Chrysler 318 V8 or similar ..

Had a good look around and jacked it up and its the gearbox mount thats broken right through. Engine mounts are fine I think...certainly not the amount of movement you guys have experienced so I'll just replace that and see how it is. Thanks alot. John.

if it's the engine you'll hear it when you rev up,

if it's a constant sort of knock and you can feel it in the stick, then it's likely the rear g'box mount... usually is in mine anyways.
