doin the straight lpg turbo power up on my tb42. purchased turbo off a performance dude. its off a vq30det..3.0l quad cam v6. the turbo is very similar in size and specs as a t3/t4..was recommended very highly as it supposedly has better internals being a genuine nissan turbo rather than the hybrid t3/t4s. what u guys reckon?

I'm going to try and run duel fuel. My Gq is EFI and i hear that you can still cruise around on petrol as i'm drawing through the air flow meter but the injectors will run out after say 50% throttle.

I ahve an impco system with a 200 series mixer. Hopefully it all works out.

What are you doing for the oil return line?

Keep us posted.

the truck is booked in for first week in feb to get the head done as i have either blown a gasket of cracked the head. chemiweld holdin everything together for now.

turbo came with all lines and fittings etc so i guess we just need to adapt to my motor..will the 200 series impco be big enough for turbo application on the tb42?????

With a blow through application it should be fine!

Are you going to put the oil return in the sump?

How much did you pay for the turbo and lines viperguy? Was it from a wrecker or private sale?

oil return will be goin back to the sump. i paid 300 for the complete turbo and all associated lines and fittings i could remove of the motor. i bought it from a mechanic who bought the complete motor off a jap spares importer. he needed the motor to replace one for a customer who had a serious custom turbo set up.

can someone tell me..as i am havin trouble getting my mind around the install..what is the difference between the blow through and the draw though set ups? my mechanic talks about doin this and that etc etc blow through etc etc and i just nod and say yep sounds good..he knows what he is doin has done quite a few gas turbos so i know he aint stooging me.. i just wanna know what he is talkin bout..

blow through puts the turbo before the carb draw through puts carb before turbo. different carbs handle either way better, different setups handle different types better.

Cool when are you getting it back?

mechanic delayed me 2 weeks in a bid to clear out some cars.. wish he had of told me that sooner...oh well. anyways after speaking to more guys in the know bout turbos thy came to the conclusion the one i intented to use is gunna be too small coming on boost way early and running outta puff too early. so its refund time for the turbo and im shopping for a xr6 turbo or a straight t4 turbo now. so revised start date is first week in february.

Hmmm i have a feeling that a straight T4 will be too big on the exhaust side and come on too late.

I ahve had a look at Sandy Bowman's Turbo in his shorty (petrol) and the comp housing is slightly bigger than a t4 BUT his exhaust is a lot smaller than my t3 housing!! The xr6 turbo will work but will come in fairly late. "RaptorThumper" on here has one but that is on his GU with a 4.5. However if you could get the smaller exhaust housing for the xr6 turbo then it would come on nice and early.

I have a t3/t4 and i'm still worried abourt it being too big and not coming on early enough!!!

yeah i was worried about xr6 turbo comin on late too.. still am. guy i bought original turbo off reckons to use it still but guy fitting it reckons too small...even thoough tb42 is larger capacity than xr6 the tb 42 is a lazy basterd and xr6 easily out revs it. mechanics says smaller exhaust housing on t4 but im tryin to do this on the cheap and dont want custom set ups..

so... smaller turbo of 3.0l quad cam v6 or larger xr6 turbo??????

DanielS...That turbo would be great.....nice big comp side and small exhaust housing but its very expensive!!!!

There is no way the xr6 turbo will be too small. Who ever said that either made a mistake or has no idea. Do a search on raptorthumper's write up with his tb45. He has shown what rpm boost comes on and from memory its just over 2200rpm so i would increase that figure buy about 150rpm for the tb42!! They are rated to flow over 600hp. Yes a ford motor is slightly smaller but revs a lot higher.

If you can get your money back for the small turbo and get an xr6 turbo for a similar price then i would go that as they are an awsome ball bearing turbo but it will come on a bit later than the smaller one. Also in future u can save up for the smaller exhaust housing which should bring it on a bit earlier. Either way your patrol will go better!!!

Cheers

I can tell you from my experience that there is less lag with the XR6 turbo when i run on petrol compared to LPG. On petrol it makes 6 psi boost at 2000rpm, but on LPG it only makes 3-4psi on LPG. I have noticed that i have a slight lean point in my air/fuel ratio's on LPG at that point, where the turbo starts boosting but due to the limited tuneability of the mixer if i richen it up using the main mixture adjustment it becomes too rich at the top end.

If you run petrol i think you will notice the improved driveability, but its only a few hundred rpm.

thanks for that raptor thumper. i hope i can get mine up and running and have it looking as tidy as ur set up. im intercooling it with the turbo fit up so im hoping it works well. i think im gunna bite the bullit and go the xr6 turbo route but do the smaller exhaust housing mod so i get low down boost.

so are u still happy with it all? mine will be straight gas set up so will be wanting it set up and working and tuned for gas only. any idea what was causing ur flat spot? is it sorted yet?

i so dont wanna open a can of worms doin this.. this truck has already been a big enough money pit..

I wouldnt turbo it then. It will always blow out (cost) if you dont want to take short cuts

or i could ask a lot of questions and get the right advice from the right people in the know and do it properly the first time. i just hate spending good money after bad....

Nothing went wrong so to speak its just all the little things that you dont allow for when doing a base costing. It adds up very fast especially if you want to make sure you never have dramas. I wanted to be able to get in mine and flog the f#&k out of it and not have problems.

A few bigger things that i didnt allow for are
Clutch(was a HD one but just spun when came on boost)
Decompressing the motor(didnt have to do it but transformed the car)
Big oil cooler and fan AND hoses AND fittings

The list goes on
dependant on your radiator+fan
gauges
etc

zac i didnt think they needed to be decompressed...my head is coming off to fix a head gasket or cracked head before the turbo fit up so i have the chance to do this..is it recommended?

the guy fitting everything up and doin the head work is my cousin so costs will be very cheap for labour side of things. ive allowed 3000 for turbo fit plus what ever the head needs. the small turbo i had cost 300, the intercooler i got cost 300, cousin wants 500 for custom manifold, oil/water lines + all air plumbing i have allowed 500. will be using a xr6 turbo so i will need another 1000. ill need dump pipe but will join to existing exhaust..aprox 300. so far it adds up to 2600. i will need some kind of air box, and tuning. so 3000 should be ok. there is a chance i might need a dif gas throttle body and convertor...everything else seems covered. i will be doin basics like prep work unbolting things and stuff..and ill do the final tidy up after the fitment and tune.

do my figures sound ok?

Where are you getting an xr6 turbo for $1000??? can you get any more?

Posted: Thu Jan 25, 2007 2:34 pm

well im saying 1000 plus the money i get back from smaller turbo...so im sayin 1300 ish? how much is a xr6 turbo worth? ive got a guy looking into one for me..just waiting for his qoute. he said round the 1000-1100 for a good looked over second hand job with the smaller exhaust mod done so i was thinking 1300 ish for a newie.. this guy builds/rebuilds turbos and i was put onto him by my mechanic cousin.

jimbo how far into this are you? if u want me to get u prices i can. the guys doin this for me reckon its the way to go oin the turbo set up. they are expecting good things.. so am i..lol

Well i'm still collecting things up....

I ahve a manifold, turbo with int waste gate, boost controller, some gaskets but i still need to get the dump pipe made up, some oil lines and the oil return line into the sump.

I'm going to spend a day moving my lpg mixer around to give me more room.

$1300 is a good price for the xr6 turbo!!

they dont need to be decompressed, IMO they should be. Not for the motors sake but just the way it performs. Chalk and cheeze.
What about your clutch? how much boost are you going to run? (you'll always wana run more)
Blow off valve you do need one
If you dont use the xr6 turbo then you will need an external gate (IMO better performance)
Oil cooler?
Radiator? (dont wana cook the mighty datto :D )
