Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I have an 88 hilux with a 2 peice tailshaft. I have a 2inch lift in the springs, and i think that is the reason my centre bearing has collapsed. The centre bearing is only 2 months old and it is completely dead. Well the rubber anyway. Anyone else experienced this ? I think it is cause the dif angle is too great, and too much force on the rubber surrounding the bearing.

Anyone else had this prob, and know how to fix it ?

I have made up one inch spacers to fit under my next centre bearing, and put a slight angle on them so it ligns up with tailshaft better. Also to straighten it out, and reduce the weight on the rubber.

Some response would be nice before I wreck my next centre bearing. They aint cheap!

Surely you have all had similiar probs when lifting your fourby's ?

i have a vt commo tailshaft laying around with a floating center bearing could it be similar?

Its not the lift i had a lux with 2.5 inch lift for 9 years and never had to replace the centre bearing. My brother had the same problem as you he took the tail shaft got new centre bearing, uni's and got it balanced and hasn't had a problem that was about 18 months ago

I think you may find that you have either a stuffed uni joint or the shaft itself is out of balance. This will chew out a centre bearing.

I am just about to replace my centre bearing, but will be doing all uni joints and getting it balanced while it is out. Mine had a shudder when I bought it ( 90 model lux ) but got worse once I lifted it

But the strange thing is, this car is the smoothest hilux I have ever had. Never misses a beat, even at 100k's with mudders it is smooth as silk. So surely the uni's cant be stuffed, or tailshaft out of balance ? Where is the super tech 4wd guru's when you need them

with a flogged bearing i can guarantee ur shaft is out of balance, replace all worn items and rebalance.

if u think any hilux is smooth as silk id doubt ud kno if ya wheels had fallen off:P

had same prob in one of my old 4bys. uni joint was flogged. shame the mechanic wasnt smart enuf to notice this when he repaced the centre bearing the 1st time when doing a roadie

I've heard that people have had probs with two piece shafts. Somehow
I seem to be exempt from this problem. I've had my two piece checked
and one uni replaced, my Lux is lifted, the gearbox is also lifted 40mm
so the gearsticks don't foul the floor, but the angle of the tailshaft seems
to be pretty good. The only catch (if any) is when you place the
driveshaft make shure the centre bearing sits comfortably (without
presure) when it is bolted home. If it doesn't you've got trouble.
Every veichle is different, spacing the centre bearing could be the
answer - in your case.

Ive spaced centre bearings in the past with good effect.
Ive also swapped shafts for one piece as well.
