I want to get a set of replacement headlights in a GQ patrol to replace the standard H4 lights as they keep filling with water. Can anyone recommend a good sealed beam replacement and where to get them from in Melbourne?

I have a pair of sealed beams, unfortunatrely I doubt there is anything like a Good sealed beam, they are pretty much all crap, in that size.
I will swap you for your H4's, if they are not rusty inside.

The H4's I have are stuffed. They are rusty and full of dust. What's the best replacement for the standard GQ lights that won't fill with water?

You would have to upgrade the wiring for those bulbs wouldn't you?

Why use those crap high wattage bulbs, that are illegal, and fry your wiring, when you can use 55/60 globes plus 30 or plus 50, that are just as bright, don't sap more power and need thicker wiring, and aren't illegal
Plus the light temperature (colour) is nicer too!!

I used the 50+ globes and they are better than standard but i have now put in 90/100 and they are deffenately better again. I also still ahve the standard wiring. They have been in for 7 months now with no problems. I still wouldnt mind upgrading wiring though.

I have been running crystal headlights - seal very well, no dust after a big dusty trip. Cost about $35/pair without the bling LED ring.
Seen them on eBay.
I also ran high-watt bulbs, went back to Phillips 60W. Just as bright, lot cooler, less current, legal.
If you want massive light use your spotties.

What a load of shit, in my line of work I have upgraded plenty of "cars" to +50 lighting as the polycarbonate lenses (most cars from 97'ish on) don't allow for higher wattage bulbs and not one of them gives the same effect as proper lights.
I couldn't give half a flying fruck if my lights are not pretty blue like the fully sik lancers on the road at least I can see a shit load further than those poor excuse +50's'
If legality's are your concern go weaker, but I don't remember him asking about that side of things, just what to run.
As for wiring theres 20 mins in doing a relay, if anyone ever needs a hand come round a Saturday morning and I will wire it up for you.

From this comment I assume you dont drive in the city with most other drivers who run legal headlights with an acceptable level of brightness. You perhaps prefer to standout.
As I have stated before, if you need better lighting for beach driving/bush/hunting, etc thats what spotlights are for. Why should I or anyone else have to look at your beyond-legal brightness. Why do you NEED it.
Maybe the authorities are ANAL in their definition of legal brightness of headlights but I will accept that, perhaps, they have QUALIFIED people who are working in the best interests of the majority of ROAD users...
If you cant see where you are going with headlights, use your spotlights.

agree..
but nothign sux more than dipping your spotties, and your 55w std globes do less than nothing, and its pitch dark compared to 5 seconds ago with 4million megawatts from spotties...

I get this with the HID hella 4000 when I had them on the magna. Turn hi-beam and spotties off and I gotta slow down to 80 (only if no ones behind me). As my eyes get used to have heaps of light out there. Then it goes to nothing. Would be good to have a little more grunt on the lowbeam. But its a magna so I aint spending money on the POS.

I just put in a set of Hella 70/75 semi-sealed beams. They are much better than the stock lights I had. Cost me $85 here in Canada (account price). Some people swear by the Cibie lights saying they project further. As for HIDs, there are too many people complaining about them here and I don't need to give the police another reason to pull me over.

Koito or Hella give the best performance in sealed beams from my experience.
Unfortunately I dont think you can get the Koito's in Oz any more unless they are second hand ones.
That's what I have (Koito) in my GQ and they are great performers (halogen bulbs too) but I have some Narva H4 inserts I'd like to try out with some decent globes.
The Hella 178mm sealed beams are 75W high beam and 50W low beam and give a great spread of light on both beams. They have the park lamp bulb aperture too.
For you guys who put high wattage H4 globes in your inserts without upgraded wiring: the previous owner of my Bundy put 100/130's in and the plug was melted on to the back of the light and I had to cut it off.
A lot of these H4 inserts are'nt rated for any more than 100W either and you can stuff the reflectors up too cos they cant handle the heat. It's only a matter of time.
cheers, sudso

As yet I have never been flashed on low beam, GQ patrols have these great screws on the lights they allow you to "aim" them so there not blinding other users, unlike those lancer wannabe blue pieces of crap which always seem to smack you in the eyes.

A while back I got some of the +50 blue style H4s
I can categorically state they are shite
..............so I put em in the wifes Lancer
Oh and yeah I went back to 100/130 with 6mm wiring all round(çept low beam)

For whatever reason too many people on here believe the crap on the box, fact is when you take the same type of bulb the larger the wattage the more output, and in actual fact lights that are tinted to make them blue/white technically have less distance, just look whiter. I can provide test data to prove this.
I would love if my VX clubsport with +50's was anywhere near my patrol in terms of output.

I would love to see some real researched data on this.
Does double the wattage equal double the visibility?
How does wattage relate to what our human eyes can see?
Is there a sweet spot in light temperature for humans to see more at night?
Is total light dependent on wattage or wattage/reflector size or what?
Can low-watt globes out-perform high-watt globes (think xenon/gas) or like horsepower you cant beat cubes?
Personally I "feel" that my Phillips 55/65 globes reveal more at night, and I felt more comfortable with, than my 90/130's, but maybe that was do do with the reflectors, i dont know...

If you want some spec on lighting visit this site (
http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech ... bulbs.html)
As this has lumen ratings and info on blue blub's ect
This has previously been mentioned but if you have blue blubs they reduce the amount of available light on the road ahead by filtering to that particular colour spectrum, Ie blue not white.
I can back this up as my Patrol has 4300k HID system and my XR8 has 5000k HID, The XR8 has less light output than the Nissan.
My 2 cent's worth Greg

It's not so much the globes, it's the reflector, size of light and lens pattern as well that makes a good light (talking about headlights here)
Simply put, the bigger the light, the more your light spread will be, more light will reflect from the reflector but if it's a crap reflector and/or a crap lens the size of the light or type of globe wont make much difference. If you put a higher wattage globe in you'll just get a brighter crap light reflection and spread.
My auto elec has Hella H4 inserts with Phillips Vision Plus globes in his GQ and they crap on any other round headlight that I've seen for brightness and light spread on low and high beam. He's tried the rest and reckons this combo is the best so far. He reckons my Narva H4 inserts wont be as good as the Hella's and even reckons they wont be as good as the Koito sealed beams I've got in there now but I'm gonna try em anyway.
Higher wattage will put out brighter light and heat but it will reflect off things more just as much. (think road signs that blind ya from the reflection

) The blue globes filter out a lot of that white light before it even hits the reflector but at the expense of brightness.
I've got some generic brand H4 globes in my Rodeo, one was called blue and the other, white gold. Same wattage as standard, less brighter than standard globes but way less glarey off road signs etc. The light spread isn't that good though (crap light pattern IKI H4 inserts) the reflectors are probably on the way out too.
