1UZ starter motors

If you`re thinking about putting a lexus motor in to something but can`t replace a starter motor yourself then I hope you have a huge bank account for the bill you`ll get off somebody that your paying to do it. Just to get to the starter its taken me 1.5hrs and my engine bay is clean and empty with heeps of room and I`ve done it once before.

OK now how the hell can I clean all the mud out of the valley without getting crap in the ports?
Oh and can you see what I dropped when I had just the top of the intake off :roll: lucky it wasn`t a nut or bolt.

Had the same problem with mine. Only difference was rather than remove the entire plenum I managed to leave it connected and move it to one side. Its a mongrel of a job but it did save me some time.

I don`t find it anymore work to fully remove it, there is only a few hoses and a few bolts. Its the bottom part of the intake that I find a prick because of the fuel line and its return and trying to get it off without any crap going down the holes.

As for cleaning the mud let me know if you find a way to do it. It really is a bad design. Only thing I can think of is to use a vac. At least that way you dont have to worry too much about crap falling in the ports :?

I ended up removing the starter motor then pushing some rags in the ports. Then got in there with my hands and scooped out about 6 or 7 hand fulls of crap. I then got the hose out and turned it on every low and slowly and gently hosed the crap out via the hole left by the starter motor. I figured my clutch is toast and is the next thing to be removed anyway so whats it going to hert. Didn`t even get any water on the rags :D

since there are prolly two of the most experienced two on lexus 8s, did you both have to change to rear sumps?
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown

I run a rear sump as I have a solid front axle.
Boof, twisty and Nemises all run front sump as they are IFS.
Nemises has either just done a SAS or is about to do one and I`ll guess he`ll end up with a rear sump aswell.

Mines got a mid sump in it (just clears everywhere)
if it ain't broke send it to me i'll fix it!

Yep mine is front sump. Bundymonkey is running a crs rear in the Bundeera also. When I sas mine I will need to do the same.

Yeah Im running a CRS in my Bundy as the Front and Mid were way to close to everything for my liking.

Guts Id the same as you with taking the starter out and draining it through the gap then let it dry and used a vac to get the rest. I used some glad wrap to keep all the crap out the ports but i didnt really get anything near it.

Ive got a Q for you Guts are you running a CRS rear? If so where did you put the dip stick?

when you drop the old sump to fit the new CRS rear sump you need to remove the dip stick from the passengers side and relocate it to the drivers side. It goes in a hole that has a plug in it and it will end up basicly under the brake booster.

Getting the old dip stick out is the hardest, it is only press fitted in and you need to knock it back out. Some come back out easy some do not, mine was a bitch.
To get the plug out of the new posi just knock it all the way threw and it will fall out the bottom (this is why you do it when the sump is off) the hole in the block does have a small lip in it but the plug in it is of a softer metal so it will just reshape its self to fit threw. To fill the old hole I put some sump gaskit glue in it then dropped the plug in. Haven`t have any problems yet. I tried to get the plug out via pushing something up from the bottom but no can do as the hole has a bend in it. Only other way would be to maybe screw something in to the plug from the top and then pull it out.

I had the starter replaced in my old soarer for $680 including towing to and from workshop. The guy laughed when I wanted him to do it in my driveway. They did it in one day so I cant complain. I since sold the entire car registered not quite roadworthy for $3500 someone got a bargain.

Is there anywhere you can drill a few holes into the bellhousing area for it to drain through into there? (it could then flow out in front of the flywheel?

Not really and I dont think that mud would just flow out anyway

There are drain holes there from the factory, one either sife of the starter. These are big enough for water to get out of quickly. Mud however tends to block things up quickly and easily.

The holes are about the size of a pen/pencil. When I`ve got the gear box out to replace the clutch (next thing on the list) I`ll look at drilling them out bigger. :idea:

Just put the engine in your buggy and you'll never have any more problems with mud and things getting dirty!!!

What a sucky place to put the starter (for a used and abused 4x4) .. I like these motors less and less ..
