I know you get a miltary spec front axle for the Defender. I think rangieuteon38's might have one on his defender.
Cheers

Mal Story (Maxi-Drive) used to strengthen the axles by laminating (sleeving the the axle tubes internally) - but thinks now that weight for strength - external strengthening is better.
like this (yes I know this is a toyota axle):

the laminated housings mals done that i have seen are all externally sleaved.
basicly half round the same dia as axle case fitted to the underside and welded. then all the diff housing plated.
dosen't add much size to the hole thing.

Mal used to sleeve internally AND externally - he then stopped doing tghe internal sleeving as it took a lot of time and added a lot of weight. IMO A truss(es) on top is the best option.

Tomcat Motorsport do a kit to strengthen axle casings in th UK.
They developed them for comp safari racing.
They're a good comprehensive kit worth checking out.

best thing u can do is get the miltary spec diff casing, i bought one about 12 months ago and have had running drives at solid boulders and has only left paint missing, i thought bout fabrication to existing but this is far superior, the casing is cast iron with a curved diff centre face on it with act as a good sliding surface, at a guess when it was empty the wall thickness in the centre would be close to 1.5 2'' solid cast, u can just pic up the empty casing one person, if u want details of where to source, let me know, i have pics on another comp that i will try to post

Hey! Thanks for all the tips I´m getting, really helpful you guys! I think I will go for external "tubing" and try to make more like maxi-drive. More or less cut a hi-spec steel pipe into two halfs and then weld it on. This to save ground clearance. Land Rover I´m building is a Defender 90 truckcab, more or less. I started with a new stronger chassi. Using a tuned merc engine.
Hope to compete in Out-Back Challange 2008! Cheers / Sam

Land Rover Wolf Military axles is what is being referred to.
It's just like the picture of the Toy axle shown.
QT, Steve Parker and Southdown all do stonger diif pans.

This how my axle looks (rear one) same diffpan in the front (6mm steel)
Plus some mod for extra shocks etc. Test setup before welding. Southdown and the other doesn´t do any HD diffpans for welding, just bolt on´s. Errg couldn´t upload image from my mac...only public servers will work I read.
