Winch question
Posted: Tue Jan 16, 2007 2:16 am
I asked this question over on Pirate earlier today:
"Okay so a friend is thinking of buying three winches for his European spec challenge truck.
Money saved can go elsewhere so he is looking for good value for money, repliability, low current draw, reasonable no load line speed but high full load line speed, low weight, standard parts with NO mods. Plasma12/Dyneema Bowrope is a must but as he will use extensions, no more than 100ft is needed on the drum. Commonality of parts would be cool.
Choices are:
Warn
8274
No load speed - 73.2 ft/min at 55amps draw
@ 8000lbs - 6.1 ft/min at 450amps draw
134:1

No load speed - 38ft/min at 70amps draw
@9500lbs - 7.6ft/min at 480amps draw

@9000lbs - 6.38ft/min at 460amps draw

Husky 8500

@8500lbs - 1.5ft/min at 405amps draw

@10000 - 1.5ft/min at 450 amps draw
X9

Hydraulic is out due to cost and weight (and who the hell needs 20mph winching?)
I haven't quoted prices because they vary so much worldwide."
Now I am not asking this question to cause a ruck, I want to know opinions. So far none of the replies on Pirate have been based on facts or figures, just 'good ol' boy reasons, along the lines of thta's what I spent all my money on, so it must be the best.
This is a genuine request for sound intelligent opinions please (Will Warne don't post and Jez, I already know what you think)
