Hope Someone Can Help!
Frustrated!

Have Downloaded Birfield.com manuals for 60 series - They have a comprehensive gearbox section, but no mention of where to fill and quantity of oil needed etc...
Same applies to transfer case.

I was sort of looking for a bung like what you would find on a diff housing.
I can't locate anything like that on the gearbox...

Would like to change oil as have never done it and diffs have had some water in them - how susceptible to water entry are gearboxes???

ok, if you go just behind the gearbox mount you will find a bolt (24mm??) on the underneath side...this is the drain plug for the gearbox. If you go directly up the passenger side from there, you will find a bolt(17mm??) facing in an downward angled direction.... this is the g'box filler plug. (To fill, use one of those 1ltr oil top up bottles with the pull out filler thingy, the same type as the brake fluid ones. Makes it easy as you can put the nozzle into the hole and squeeze the oil in, you just have to fill it up a few times thats all. It's full when you can either feel oil when you put your pinky finger in the hole and feel oil .... or it overflows  )

the transfercase filler plug (17mm??) is located on the back of the T/C to the passenger side. Roughly in line with where the speedo cable screws into the T/C. The drain plug should be simple enough to find as it is on the bottom of the T/C.. (again 24mm bolt??)

Hope that helps. ;)

Yeah I'm sure the gearbox filler plug is 24mm, if you don't have a pump device just get a small bottle and fill it up repeatedly. I also have downloaded the Birfield manuals and I'm sure it tells you the quantanties. I'll sus it out when I get home and post then. Joel

Couple of ideas for filling...

you can use either an old fire extinguisher (water type with air valve) or one of the garden weed spray bottles...
Just put your oil in.. screw on lid.. then pressurise a little... then just sqeeze the trigger and oil will flow in....

Might be easier than the little squeeze bottle if you have access to either of these..

Or don't be tight and buy a pump :D You won't regret it (especially if your doing diff oil 6 times a year :S)

The filler plug can have either a 17 mm or 24mm hex head. They came out with 17mm but they round off easily and the 24mm head ones are then fitted due to the cost of the original one.

I find the easiest way to do it is to pop the car up on one of my hoists, whip the plug out and pump the new oil in :P
Cheers. Dan
