Air intake for GQ

Hi Guys! My very 1st post but have been looking at site for a while.

I have an 89 GQ TD42 wagon that I bought a few years ago. It's got a Safari turbo kit fitted by previous owner. The air intake is complicated and probably restrictive- pre cleaner to 2nd filter mounted cross ways on engine then down to turbo then across to inlet.

I want to simplify/improve air intake to one filter straight into turbo which can later be hooked up to snorkel (don't have one fitted as yet). I drive at least 20k's each day on dusty road so need something with good filtration and is easy to clean.

Nearest decent car acc. places are 2.5hrs away so where you got bits from would be helpfull. Also pics would be good.

Now I'm registered I hope I can contribute specially with alpine driving/cold weather stuff. Thanks.

Hi mate,my turbo is the same set up with bends everywhere! Ive got an air box off a 3ltrGu to fit up which makes things alot less complicated.Just got it today and looks like it should bolt straight in,so ill let you know when its all finished.

Thanks mate, just an air box off a 3ltr GU which bolted straight in,i had to make a flange for the outlet on the box to fit 3'' flexi tube.I used a reducer from 3 to 2 and a half inch to connect to the turbo and its done! Got the tube and reducer from autobarn and the air box from a wrecker.Runs alot smoother and spools up quicker now.

Thanks fellas. Just out of interest, how much did the wrecker hit you up for the bits? Was the GU box a straight bolt in?

Also, when I sort out the inlet, I'm going to fit an oil catch can to the breather to stop blow-by crap going thru turbo- can't be good for the turbo long term and I'm sick of the mess.

Thanks again.

I dont know yet how much the air box is,local 4x4 shop got it for me. The
flex tube and reducer was $48 from autobarn altho im not happy with quality of the flex tube, might change it to one like safari use for there snorkel connections.Yes the box bolts straight in,no drilling holes.
Im gonna plumb the breather back into the air box so i dont have to worry about it,hasnt hurt the turbo in 300000kms so cant be too bad altho it is messy!
